Red Sox prospect Steen recovering after crash

Red Sox prospect Kevin Steen is in stable condition as he recovers from a deadly car crash last week in Florida.
"Kevin is resting and in stable condition at local Fort Myers hospital while he recovers from multiple surgeries to his lower extremities after being involved in an accident last Wednesday night," the Red Sox said in a statement. "As of now, there are no additional surgeries planned and the next steps of his recovery are being discussed."

Steen was involved in a two-car collision a week ago in Lehigh Acres, Florida, when another driver traveling in the opposite direction lost control of their 2002 Dodge Neon and crashed head-on into the prospect's 2007 Cadillac Escalade. The other driver, not identified by Florida Highway Patrol, was killed in the crash. Steen was rushed to a hospital and was in critical condition.
Makysha Robinson, Steen's aunt, posted on Facebook on May 1 that the pitcher had undergone surgeries on his hip and both knees: "Surgery this morning went great on the left knee," Robinson wrote. "They were able to repair the left knee in one surgery. He is now in recovery. Continued prayers please!"
She posted an update Wednesday that said Steen "is progressing and preparing for rehabilitation."
"Just an unfortunate situation. Kind of bad place, bad time," Red Sox manager John Farrell said last week. "I know he's a very upbeat, positive young guy. Our thoughts are certainly with him and his family."
Darren Fenster, manager of the Red Sox Class A affiliate in Greenville, urged fans to help support Steen and his family, tweeting out a fundraiser effort that includes T-shirts and a sticker for the "Kevin Steen Fund."

Steen was Boston's ninth-round pick in the 2014 Draft out of Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee and spent last season with Class A Short Season Lowell, going 3-5 with a 5.37 ERA in 14 starts. He saw time with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox in 2014 and 2015. The 6-foot-1 righty, in Fort Myers for extended spring training at the time of the crash, has appeared in 30 career Minor League games and owns a 4.16 ERA with 93 strikeouts and 64 walks in 129 2/3 innings.
