LAS VEGAS, Nevada - The first-place Memphis Redbirds (67-38) hit three home runs in their first three-at bats, powering an 8-3 win in the series opener at the Las Vegas 51s (Mets) Friday night in Las Vegas, Nev.
Adolis García homered in the second inning, his fourth in the last two games and 18th of the year overall, Edmundo Sosa hit a two-run shot also in the second, and Tyler O'Neill smacked a two-run blast in the third. It was O'Neill's 26th of the season and sixth in his last four contests.
Garcia finished with two RBI on the night, and he now has driven in 10 runs in the last two games. Sosa also drove in and scored two runs for the Redbirds.
Jake Woodford got the win, working 5.2 innings and giving up just one run on five hits. Tommy Layne pitched 1.1 scoreless frames, and Edward Mujica threw a scoreless ninth inning to seal the victory. Matt Bowman allowed two runs in the eighth inning.
Memphis led 7-0 before the 51s got their first run in the bottom of the fifth. Memphis answered right back with a tally in the top of the sixth, and the Redbirds held the 8-1 lead until Las Vegas got a pair in the home-half of the eighth.
Luke Voit was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and two walks. O'Neill also drew two free passes in the game, as did Carson Kelly.
