MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The first-place Memphis Redbirds (78-52) moved one win away from a second-straight Pacific Coast League American Southern Division championship after a 9-3 win over the second-place Nashville Sounds (Athletics) Friday night at AutoZone Park.
With the victory, Memphis' magic number moves to one with three games remaining this series against Nashville.
Four Redbirds had multiple hits in the game, and Randy Arozarena homered and was on base four times. The final four hitters in the Memphis lineup scored seven of the team's nine runs.
The Redbirds scored a run in the first inning, five more in the second, and two in the third to open an 8-0 lead. Ramón Urías blasted a three-run double in the bottom of the second to turn a 3-0 Memphis lead into a 6-0 advantage.
Memphis' Kevin Herget picked up the win with 6.0 innings of work, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. He is 9-10 on the season. Conner Greene, Tommy Layne, and rehabbing Dominic Leone tossed the final 3.0 innings to secure the win. Greene and Leone allowed runs.
Redbird pitching struck out 11 Sounds in the game.
The Redbirds have three more games against the Sounds through Monday, before Memphis concludes the regular season on the road at Round Rock and Nashville.
