MEMPHIS, TN – The Memphis Redbirds dropped game one to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp of a six-game series at 121 Financial Ballpark on Tuesday night by the final score of 5-2.
Memphis jumped out ahead in the second inning. Designated hitter Alec Burleson led off the frame with a walk, followed by a first baseman Luken Baker RBI single to make the score 1-0.
After Jacksonville scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning, it was Burleson’s time to shine once more. The left-handed hitter clubbed his 19th home run of the season to lead off the Redbirds fourth, his league-leading 72nd RBI of the season.
Starting pitcher Matthew Liberatore (4-4) is credited with the loss after going 3.0 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits, including a grand slam.
The Memphis Redbirds (54-45) return to AutoZone Park on Wednesday night against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (55-45), Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins for a scheduled 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch.
