PEARL, MS – After the Biloxi Shuckers (18-19) were beaten by late-game rallies the last two nights, the Shuckers used a rally of their own to down the Mississippi Braves (16-21) 4-3 on Friday night at Trustmark Park.
With Biloxi trailing 3-1 entering the eighth inning, Cam Devanney clubbed a game-tying home run over the left-field wall to even the game at three. RHP Harold Chirino (W, 1-0) fired a scoreless inning to keep the M-Braves bats at bay in the eighth. In the ninth, Felix Valerio reached on an error to keep the momentum moving. Valerio would then steal second base to put himself in scoring position, his team leading 11th steal of the season. Two batters later, Jakson Reetz knocked Valerio home with a single to right field off RHP Tyler Ferguson (L, 1-1) and handed Biloxi back a 4-3 lead. RHP Zach Vennaro (S, 4) retired the M-Braves side in order and secured a 4-3 comeback victory for Biloxi.
RHP Victor Castaneda started the game strong by not allowing a base runner through the first three innings. In the fourth inning, Michael Harris II doubled down the right field line to record the M-Braves first hit. Drew Lugbauer would later double him home to make it 1-0 Mississippi.
The Shuckers would tie the game in the sixth inning. Reetz clubbed his tenth home run of the season and sixth over his last seven games. The M-Braves answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. After Harris II led off the frame with a single, Yariel Gonzalez homered over the right-field fence for the second straight night to retake the lead.
Biloxi almost reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning. Devanney and Yeison Coca each reached base to start the frame. Joey Wiemer would follow with a single to load the bases with one out. After Valerio struck out, Thomas Dillard crushed a deep fly ball the opposite way to left field. Jalen Miller made a game-saving catch leaping into the wall to end the inning.
The Shuckers and M-Braves meet again on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Noah Zavolas (0-0, 2.70) starts for Biloxi opposite of RHP Tanner Gordon (0-2 12.19) for Mississippi.
