CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 28, 2019) - For the first time this season the Clinton LumberKings topped the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field with a 5-0 win on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped a four-game skid for Clinton (22-23, 55-49) with their third shutout win of the year.
The LumberKings started the scoring immediately with a three-run rally in the top of the first inning. Christopher Torres took the first pitch of the game from Kernels (20-15, 58-47) starter Austin Schulfer and doubled to left - extended his hitting streak to 16-games. Will Banfield drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Evan Edwards followed with an RBI single that capped the rally.
The offense was more than enough to hang Schulfer (6-5) with the loss. He turned in a six-inning outing, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
In the top of the fourth, Clinton added to their lead. Edwards doubled to lead off, one of his three hits, and then scored on a Thomas Jones sacrifice fly to center field.
Jones would add his second RBI of the game with a mammoth home run in the top of the sixth inning. The blast cleared the left field fence by plenty and left the stadium for his ninth home run of the year.
Remey Reed (2-0) needed little support and cruised to his second win of the season. He turned in a career high 7.2 innings and did not allow a run while scattering five hits, walking none and striking out eight.
Elkin Alcala worked the final 1.1 inning for Clinton and preserved the shutout win when he stranded the basses loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
The LumberKings will meet the Cedar Rapids Kernels for third and final game of their three-game series on Monday afternoon. Clinton will throw righty Jake Walters (2-3, 2.82) while Cedar Rapids will tap righty Tyler Palm (2-6, 3.92). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. (CDT).
