FRISCO – Despite sturdy pitching Wednesday evening, the Hooks dropped both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 3-1 and 2-1 before a crowd of 2,364 in the opening contests of a six-game series at Riders Field.
Wednesday’s nightcap featured a sterling start by Corpus Christi left-hander Jonathan Bermudez (1-1), who absorbed the tough-luck loss. Bermudez struck out a career-best 10 batters without issuing a walk. He held the RoughRiders to four hits in 5.0 innings.
Frisco’s (6-2) decisive two runs came in the second. Ryan Dorow began the frame with a double to right field and Dio Arias immediately followed with a single. Two strikeouts and a stolen base later, Dorow came home on an infield hit, and then Arias scored while Jax Biggers was caught in a rundown between first and second base after being picked off.
The lone Hooks (2-6) marker came on a J.J. Matijevic line drive home run to right field in the first, Matijevic’s first round-tripper of the year.
Riders starter Tyler Phillips (1-0) responded by facing one over the minimum until his exit following the fifth. Scott Engler fanned four over 2.0 frames to record the save.
Frisco lefty Jake Latz (1-0) picked up the win in the Wednesday opener, holding the Hooks to one hit in the first five innings.
Meanwhile, the RoughRiders jumped out a 3-0 lead against J.P. France. Frisco pushed across an unearned marker in the first before tacking on a pair in the fourth. A two-out infield single by Bubba Thompson accounted for the first RBI off France (1-1). J.P. Martinez followed with a four-pitch bases-loaded walk to cap the scoring.
Rehabbing Astros right-hander Enoli Paredes whiffed two in a 1-2-3 sixth. Paredes has not permitted a run or a hit in three appearances for Corpus Christi, striking out eight while walking one in 4.0 innings.
The Hooks, who have dropped five in a row, mustered just eight baserunners over the 14.0 innings Wednesday.
Corpus Christi aims to stop the slide Thursday with Joe Record on the hill. Frisco is slated to start Cole Winn. First pitch 7:05.
