The International League announced today that Toledo infielder Ronny Rodríguez has been named the League's Player of the Month for May. Along with winners from other leagues, Rodriguez will be presented with an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of his performance last month.
May was certainly an unforgettable month for Ronny Rodríguez, who led the International League with a .383 batting average, 44 hits, and 24 RBI for the circuit's winningest team, Toledo. The month ended with Rodriguez getting the call to Detroit, where he made his Major League debut on May 31 in style by going 2-for-4 with a double and triple. Rodriguez hit safely in 25 of 28 games for the Mud Hens in May, including putting together the League's longest hitting streak of the season of 18 straight contests from May 4-22. In his last game with Toledo before being promoted, he hit for the cycle with a pair of home runs in a 12-7 rout of Syracuse. The five-hit day brought Rodriguez's League-leading total on the season to 63. He is the first member of the Mud Hens to be honored as IL Player of the Month since third baseman Jefry Marte in June of 2015.
26-year-old Ronny Rodriguez is in his first season in the Detroit organization after signing as a free agent in December. Prior to 2018, his entire career had been spent in the Cleveland farm system, where a year ago he was named an organizational All-Star by MLB.com as well as an International League postseason All-Star for Columbus. Rodriguez is a native of Santiago, Dominican Republic.
