FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 8, 2017) - The Fort Myers Miracle (27-32) and Tampa Yankees (31-30) split a doubleheader on Thursday night with each team winning their game 2-1. RHP Dereck Rodríguez tossed his first career complete game in the Game Two win for the Miracle.
GAME 1:
Max Murphy started the night with a leadoff blast in the bottom of the first inning on the first pitch he saw from RHP Brody Koerner (W, 1-1). The Yankees' righty settle in and did not allow a run the rest of the way as Fort Myers went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
The Yankees jumped into the lead in the third when Francisco Diaz took RHP Brady Anderson (L, 2-2) deep to left. The two-run shot provided the 2-1 final score as Anderson dealt six of the seven innings, allowing just four hits.
In innings two through seven, Fort Myers found themselves with a runner in scoring position in all but one frame. In the bottom of the seventh (last) inning, RHP Anyelo Gómez walked a pair of batters with two outs to bring in RHP Andrew Schwaab (S, 1) for the save. Zander Wiel grounded out to third to end Game One.
GAME 2:
Game Two saw the Yankees strike first in the first when Jorge Mateo led off the game with a triple. The next batter, Kyle Holder, singled to left off Rodriguez (W, 5-2) to plate the first run of the game.
After allowing another single to Chris Gittens, Rodriguez proceeded to give up one single the rest of the way. The FSL All-Star set down 11 straight at one point, and fanned the side in the seventh to record his season-high ten strikeouts.
The Miracle tied the game and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth against starter RHP Taylor Widener (L, 3-6). Murphy led off with a triple of his own, and he was brought home by Alex Perez. After back-to-back walks to load the bases with no one out, Kevin Garcia grounded into a 4-6-3 double play which scored Perez. Fort Myers took the 2-1 lead to a doubleheader split.
The two teams battle in a third game on Halfway to Star Wars Night, a Friday night with first pitch at 7:05 PM ET. RHP David Fischer battles RHP Zach Littell.
