ZEBULON, N.C. - Weston Wilson hit his team leading 13th home run of the season and pitchers Cam Roegner, Jorge Ortega, Daniel Brown and Luke Barker combined on an eight hit shutout as the Mudcats defeated the Pelicans 1-0 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.

The 1-0 blanking of the visiting Pelicans (13-21, 47-57) was Carolina's ninth shutout of the season, but their first since May 31 in Lynchburg when the Mudcats (19-14, 53-50) defeated the Hillcats 9-0. Thursday's home win also clinched a series victory as Carolina won two of the three in the four game series.
Wilson went 2-for-2 with the only run of the game as he homered to start the Carolina half of the second. His home run came against Myrtle Beach starter Manny Rondon and was his team best 13th of the year. It also brought his overall season RBI total to a team best 58 on the year.
Roegner (9-5, 2.16) started and earned the win after totaling three strikeouts and after allowing five hits over five scoreless frames. His victorious scoreless effort dropped his season long earned run average to just 2.16. Thus, moving him ahead of teammate Conor Harber (2.18) for the Carolina League in earned run average for the season.
Ortega (H, 1) took over for Roegner in the sixth and went on to work through two and 2/3 scoreless frames while earning a hold in his second appearance with Carolina. Ortega scattered just three hits in his outing and escaped a jam in the seventh after leaving runners at second and third.
Brown (H, 4) entered the game with two outs in the eighth and went on to retire his only batter faced as he got the left-handed hitting Luis Ayala to ground out to second. Carolina's southpaw reliever retired just the one batter, but also left a runner on base as he inherited one from Ortega. Brown has now inherited 22 runners this season and has only allowed three to score.
Barker (S, 16) came on for the ninth and earned his Carolina League leading 16th save of the season. He also struck out one and finished the game with a groundout to third over his scoreless frame.
Rondon (0-1, 1.65) suffered the loss for the Pelicans after allowing just the one run on two hits over four innings pitched. Relievers Tyler Peyton and Jose Paulino followed and went on to hold Carolina scoreless over the final four innings. Peyton allowed three hits, walked one and struck out one over two and 1/3 scoreless. Paulino then worked the final inning and 2/3 without allowing a run. He also walked one and struck out one.
Thursday's series finale also happened to be the overall season series finale between the two teams. Carolina improved to 12-9 versus the Pelicans this season with Thursday's home win.
The Mudcats next play on Friday night in Potomac as they begin a new three game road series versus the Potomac Nationals. The game will air on the Mudcats Radio Network, the Big Dawg 98.5 FM and via TuneIn Radio at carolinamudcats.com.
