Roegner Tosses Seven Shutout Frames in 5-1 Win

ZEBULON, N.C. - Cam Roegner pitched through seven scoreless innings while lowering his Carolina League leading earned run average to 0.89 and Weston Wilson went 4-for-4 at the plate as the Mudcats defeated the Blue Rocks 5-1 in front of a crowd of 5,048 on Saturday evening at Five County

ZEBULON, N.C. - Cam Roegner pitched through seven scoreless innings while lowering his Carolina League leading earned run average to 0.89 and Weston Wilson went 4-for-4 at the plate as the Mudcats defeated the Blue Rocks 5-1 in front of a crowd of 5,048 on Saturday evening at Five County Stadium.

Roegner (4-1, 0.89) scattered two hits, walked one and struck out one while leading the Mudcats (17-19) to the home victory. Roegner also induced 10 groundouts against five flyouts and stranded four base runners while reaching 91 pitches (55 strikes) and picking up his fourth win. It was also his sixth scoreless outing and fifth quality start of the season.
Carolina struck first with a two-out run scoring single from Wilson in the second and led 1-0 early in the game against starter Arnaldo Hernandez and the Blue Rocks (15-20). Wilson's hit was his first of four (matching a career high) in the game. His first hit also brought in Ronnie Gideon from third after he had double earlier in the inning.

Hernandez (4-1, 2.97) ended up holding Carolina scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth before later giving up two runs and two hits in the sixth while falling behind 3-0 in the game. Hernandez suffered the loss and saw his consecutive winning decision streak end at four straight games. He also struck out six and gave up three runs on five hits in the loss.
Carolina had a 1-0 lead through the fifth, but then went up 3-0 after Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. started the sixth with a double before scoring two batters later on a RBI triple from Keston Hiura. Hernandez left after allowing Hiura's triple and reliever Josh Mitchell then entered the game. Tucker Neuhaus greeted the new Wilmington pitcher with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Hiura and putting the Mudcats up 3-0.
The Carolina seventh started with a double from Wilson and continued with a wild pitch lost by Mitchell, putting Wilson at third. Max McDowell then followed with a RBI single to right to bring in Wilson, and a wild pitch later in the frame lost by reliever Matt Wynne would score McDowell to give Carolina a 5-0 lead.
Mitchell allowed two runs and two hits over 2/3 inning in what was his Carolina League debut. Wynne finished the seventh and later worked the eighth while going through two scoreless frames with three hits allowed, two walks and one strikeout.
Reliever Alec Kenilvort later worked the final two frames following Roegner and finished with one run allowed on two hits over two innings pitched. Kenilvort allowed two hits in a run in the ninth, but struck out three and wound up finishing the game for the Mudcats.
The Mudcats took a 2-1 series lead with the victory and will next play on Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m. as they look for the series victory.
