Burlington, N.C. - The Royals dropped their sixth straight contest on Monday in a 3-0 loss to the Rays. Leaving runners hurt Burlington badly, with seven total stranded throughout the game including three in scoring position.
With one out in the bottom of the third, the Royals had runners on second and third with only one out. However, a strikeout and a flyout to center robbed them from drawing first blood. The Rays followed that with two runs in the top of the fourth, with one run scoring on a solo homer from
Burlington got another scoring chance runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but a lineout straight to second baseman Brett Wisely stopped that rally.
The third and final run for Princeton came in the top of the seventh. With two away, Gionti hit a high curling shot over the foul pole in left field that Kaleb Devier deemed fair to put the Rays up 3-0.
First-year pro Brayden Theriot earned the win for Princeton, tossing 1.1 scoreless relief innings with no hits, no walks and a strikeout. Royals starter
Burlington looks to snap the losing streak on Tuesday when it takes on Princeton for the second game in a three game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
