Summary

RubberDucks right-hander Tanner Burns pitched five innings to earn his first win since April in a 4-1 Game 1 victory, and after a season-long four innings from right-hander Thomas Ponticelli in Game 2, Akron won, 4-2, for a doubleheader sweep of the Altoona Curve Saturday night to take four of the first five in a six-game series at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Turning Point

In Game 1, with Akron leading, 1-0, in the fifth inning against Altoona right-hander Quinn Priester, third baseman Daniel Schneemann – already with an RBI single in his first at-bat – singled to left field and went to third base on a single by designated hitter Angel Lopez. Second baseman José Tena had an infield RBI single, and catcher Bryan Lavastida hit a two-out RBI double to right field for a 3-0 lead. In Game 2, with a 1-1 tie in the fourth against right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski, center fielder Julian Escobedo singled, stole second base, advanced on a flyout and scored on a single by left fielder Quentin Holmes. Holmes stole second base, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tena’s groundout.

Mound Presence

Burns began with four scoreless innings in Game 1, before allowing a fifth-inning leadoff home run to center fielder Connor Scott. He retired the next three batters to complete five innings, allowing three hits and one walk with one strikeout to earn his first win since April 30 against Altoona. Right-hander Kyle Marman pitched two scoreless innings for his first save since May 26. In Game 2, Ponticelli allowed a run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts in four innings. Left-hander Eli Lingos entered with a 4-1 lead and pitched two perfect innings. Right-hander Jerson Ramírez began the seventh inning but walked four straight batters with one out. With the tying and winning runs on base, right-hander Carlos Vargas earned his first career save when Tena turned a grounder into a game-ending double play.

Duck Tales

Designated hitter Micah Pries had three extra-base hits in the doubleheader, including a first-inning go-ahead RBI double against right-hander Colin Selby and team-high 16th home run in the fifth inning against Mlodzinski.
