Summary

The Altoona Curve homered in each of the first two innings and posted a five-run fourth inning to roll to a 9-2 win over the Akron RubberDucks in the opener of a six-game series at Peoples Natural Gas Field Tuesday night.

Turning Point

In a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning against Akron right-hander Tommy Mace, Curve left fielder Matt Fraizer hit a leadoff single, shortstop Andres Alvarez walked, and designated hitter Matt Jarvis hit a three-run home run to left-center field to give the Curve a 4-1 lead.

Mound Presence

Mace allowed a first-inning solo home run to Curve center fielder Matt Gorski and the second-inning go-ahead homer to Jarvis. He worked a scoreless third inning before allowing three hits and a walk to begin the fourth inning before departing with a 7-2 deficit. Right-hander Mason Hickman entered to allow a leadoff RBI double before retiring eight of nine batters. He allowed one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings. Right-hander Tyler Thornton worked around a walk for 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and right-hander Franco Aleman pitched a perfect eighth inning, extending his 12-outing, 18 1/3-inning scoreless streak since joining Akron.

Duck Tales

RubberDucks second baseman Aaron Bracho homered leading off the second inning against left-hander Nick Dombkowski, tying the game, 1-1. In the third, trailing 4-1, Akron first baseman Joe Naranjo walked, went to third base on center fielder Petey Halpin’s double to right field, and scored on shortstop Milan Tolentino’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. Akron had only two more hits and did not put another runner in scoring position over the final six innings.

Catcher Micael Ramírez threw out three of five baserunners attempting stolen bases.
