The number one prospect in Adley Rutchsman debuted for the Norfolk Tides as they won over the Memphis Redbirds in a shutout, 4-0. In his first Triple-A game Rutschman went 2-for-4 hitting a single and a double, while also scoring a run. He also caught his first Triple-A one hit shutout.

Rutschman, the number one prospect in Baseball by MLB.com and Baseball America, was drafted first overall in the 2019 MLB draft from Oregon State by the Baltimore Orioles. In 80 games with Bowie, Rutschman hit .271 with 18 home runs and 55 RBI. He started at catcher (51 games), first base (20 games) and designated hitter (nine games).

The first Tides run came in the second inning on a Kelvin Gutierrez solo home run. Gutierrez has hit two home runs in his past nine games after not having a home run with the Tides all year. His first Tides home run came on a three-run shot in the, 4-3, win over the Durham Bulls on August 1.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mason McCoy led off with a triple and scored on a Zach Jarrett single. This was McCoy’s sixth triple of the year which ties him for first in the Triple-A East in triples on the year. Zach Jarrett’s one-run single put the Tides up 2-0 over the Redbirds.

Rutschman’s first career Triple-A hit and RBI came in the sixth inning with a single to left. He scored Jarrett, who had doubled and stole third base earlier in the inning. That extended Norfolk’s lead to 3-0.

A double by Rutschman and a single by Jahmai Jones in the eighth inning scored the last run of the game for the Tides. Norfolk beat Memphis, 4-0, after the Tides finished with four extra-base hits: two doubles, one triple and one home run.

Norfolk starter Bruce Zimmermann pitched in his second game with the Tides on rehab assignment. On June 18, he was put on the 10-day Injured List with left bicep tendinitis. He started his rehab assignment with the FCL Orioles on July 26 and made a second start with Aberdeen on July 31 before coming to the Tides on August 5. In this game against the Redbirds, Zimmermann got his first Tides win after allowing no hits in 5.0 innings pitched.

Norfolk took game one of the series against Memphis, 4-0, for just their fourth shutout win of the year. This game versus the Memphis Redbirds marked the first time Norfolk hosted a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate at the Triple-A level. Game two of the series is tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will Bark at the Park night, where you can bring your dog with a five dollar ticket.
