PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 1, 2019) - Joe Ryan struck out seven Monday, but the St. Lucie Mets rallied late to snap the Stone Crabs' six-game winning streak in a 6-2 win at Charlotte Sports Park.
Ryan struck out seven over 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. He extended his organization lead to 111 strikeouts.
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Mikey York (1-5) allowed a walk and a single to start the inning. The Stone Crabs then brought in Chandler Raiden , who got Jeremy Vasquez to line out. After an error and a stolen base put runners at second and third with one out, Cody Bohanek grounded a ball to third. Jim Haley charged, fielded and fired home to cut down the lead runner at home for the second out. After Raiden worked the county full on Matt Winaker, the Mets' right fielder rifled a two-run double down the right field line to give St. Lucie a 4-2 lead.
After the Winaker hit, Mitch Ghelfi and Nick Meyer both lined doubles to extend the Mets' lead to 6-2.
The Stone Crabs did manage to erase two deficits Monday. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Garrett Whitley doubled before advancing to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Jake Palomaki lined a fly ball to right field to score Whitley and tie the game at one.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Thomas Milone ripped a double to the wall in right. Two batters later, Carl Chester lined a two-out triple into the right field corner to score Milone and level the game at two.
The Stone Crabs will look to even the series at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Shane McClanahan (0-0, .048) will pitch for Charlotte, against Luc Rennie (5-2, 3.91) of the Mets. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
