GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Appalachian League announced Monday that Greeneville Reds 1B Rylan Thomas has been named the circuit's Player of the Month for July. This is the second honor for him this season, as he was named the league's Player of the Week for the time period between July 23-29.
Thomas is the first Greeneville player to win the circuit's Player of the Month award since OF Mitch Einertson was named the Appy League Player of the Month in July of 2004. That year marked the inaugural season of modern-day professional baseball in Greeneville, Tenn.
In 26 games during the season's first full month, Thomas led the league in slugging percentage (.734) and OPS (1.230), plus was tied for the league-lead in home runs (9) and extra-base hits (15). The 21-year-old additionally ranked second in the circuit in total bases (58) and walks (28), third in on-base percentage (.495), sixth in RBI (21), and tied for sixth in runs scored (21).
Entering Monday, the Winter Garden, Fla. native was fourth in the circuit in slugging percentage (.641), tied for fourth in home runs (9), plus fifth in walks (30) and on-base percentage (.452). Furthermore, Thomas leads the Appalachian League with the best home-run-per-at-bat ratio, averaging one every 11.44 at-bats.
Thomas was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round (769th overall) of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Central Florida.
Greeneville hits the road on Monday to kick-start a six-game road trip, beginning with three affairs in Bluefield against the Blue Jays. RHP Lyon Richardson (0-4, 7.36 ERA) - Cincinnati's No. 20 prospect according to MLB.com - is expected to take the mound for the G-Reds in the lid-lifter. The Jays are projected to counter with RHP Troy Watson (2-0, 1.29 ERA).
