Clinton, IA (August 10, 2018) - Ryne Inman, Marvin Gorgas, and Sam Delaplane combined to shutout the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 1-0 Clinton LumberKings win on Friday night at Ashford University Field. The win snaps a stretch of four straight losses by the LumberKings (22-25, 61-56) to the Kernels (30-17, 63-53).
Ryne Inman was much of the story for the LumberKings as he turned in one of his most dominant starts of the season. Over six plus innings of work he held Cedar Rapids to just three hits while walking none and striking out seven.
Inman (4-8), who earned the win, snapped a personal losing streak of five games with his performance and kept the Kernels off balance with a sharp curveball and fastball that reached 92 MPH. At times he suffocated the Kernels with his pitching and allowed no more than one runner to reach against at him at any one time.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Lumberkings pushed across the game's only run on a Juan Camacho RBI double down the line at third. The hit scored Onil Pena all the way from first and was the only run allowed by Kernels starter Blayne Enlow.
Enlow (2-5) was hung with the loss for his five innings of work. Despite holding the LumberKings to just one run on three hits while walking one and striking out four he was out dueled by Inman.
Marvin Gorgas followed Inman out from the bullpen in the top of the seventh and worked around trouble to strand runners at second and third.
Gorgas worked into the ninth and left with one out in the inning and the bases loaded but earned his fourth hold of the season for his time out.
Sam Delaplane came on with one out and the bases loaded in the ninth, struck out Jacob Pearson, and then retired Trey Cabbage on a ground out to first to preserve the 1-0 win and earn his team leading eighth save of the season.
The LumberKings will now hit the road for a four-game series with the Peoria Chiefs that will open on Saturday night. Clinton will throw right-hander Clay Chandler (6-3, 3.81) while the Chiefs will tap righty Paul Balestrieri (7-4, 3.84). First pitch is slated for 6:30 PM. Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio ap at 6:15 PM with the pregame show.
