Niles, OH- Danny Salazar, making a rehab appearance at Eastwood Field on Tuesday night, did what the Mahoning Valley Scrappers hoped he would. He went five dominant innings to help the Scrappers top the Brooklyn Cyclones, 4-1. The win snaps a four game losing streak for Mahoning Valley and pushes the overall record back above the .500 mark.
After Salazar breezed through the first inning, the Scrappers would get all the offense they needed in the bottom of the inning. Austen Wade started the inning with a single. Samad Taylor followed with his second homerun in as many games, this one a two run shot for a 2-0 lead. Nolan Jones followed with a double. Jones would come around to score on a Clark Scolamiero RBI single for a 3-0 first inning lead.
The Scrappers would add on an insurance run in the bottom of the second inning. Ernie Clement started the inning with a single. Clement then stole second base and would advance to third on a fielding error. Jones' RBI single would then bring Clement in for a 4-0 lead.
With a 4-0 lead, Salazar cruised through his five innings of work to pick up the win. He scattered two hits while walking two and striking out seven.
After Salazar exited, Zach Plesac followed with three innings of relief. Plesac allowed one earned run on three hits. He walked one and struck out four. Jonathan Teaney then picked up his first save of the season when he worked a scoreless ninth inning. Teaney did not allow a hit or a run while walking one and striking out two.
The Scrappers and Cyclones continue their series on Wednesday night at 7:05pm. LHP Francisco Perez will get the start for the Scrappers. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets or get them online at www.mvscrappers.com.
