Cabbage harvests 487-foot homer for Bees

The early leader in the clubhouse for longest home run in professional baseball in 2023 is Triple-A Salt Lake's Trey Cabbage. And that number is 487 feet after the Angels farmhand's power display Tuesday night.

When Cabbage's dinger sailed past the previous Minor League high of 471 feet set by Triple-A Nashville's Alex Jackson on April 4, it also went farther than any hit to date at the Major League level this year.

In the bottom of the second inning against Reno left-hander Tommy Henry, Cabbage got ahold of the third pitch he saw from the D-backs prospect, mashing it just under the scoreboard beyond the berm at Smith's Ballpark. With 6.7 seconds of hangtime, the exit velocity on the solo shot was 111.1 mph, leaving no doubt about it as soon as he made contact.

In fact, the first baseman/outfielder has been leaving no doubt for Salt Lake often in the young season. Cabbage has teed off four times as he's quickly adjusted to his first taste of the top level of the Minors. The 25-year-old has 40 long balls over his last 140 Minor League games.

With Angels first baseman Jake Lamb struggling to get going offensively so far this year at the big league level and Jared Walsh still dealing with headaches and insomnia, Cabbage could force the issue by continuing to produce in the Pacific Coast League. He came into Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Aces with a slash line of .404/.436/.731, which includes 10 extra base hits this season.
