WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (June 6, 2022) – Hudson Valley Renegades RHP Matt Sauer has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the week of May 30-June 5, it was announced today.
In his lone appearance of the week, Sauer threw 7.0 shutout innings against the Aberdeen IronBirds, allowing just one hit and walking one while striking out six and picking up the win. The right-hander has been on a roll lately, going 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA (2 ER/19.1 IP) in his last three starts, giving up only 10 hits, two walks and striking out 19.
“It’s very well-deserved for Matt. He’s been working hard at the objectives we’ve put together for his development,” said Renegades Pitching Coach Spencer Medick. “He’s turned in great outings the last three times he’s gotten the ball, and really continues to improve each week. It’s a great honor for him with all the great arms in this league, but really a testament to how good he’s been for us.”
Overall in 2022, Sauer leads the Renegades staff with a 3.43 ERA, 56 strikeouts and a 1.03 WHIP. He leads the South Atlantic League in WHIP, is fourth in ERA, tied for fourth in opponent’s batting average (.210), and 10th in strikeouts.
Sauer was drafted by the Yankees in the 2nd round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Righetti High School in Santa Maria, California. He debuted with the Renegades in 2021, starting eight games with the team. Sauer is the first Hudson Valley player to win a weekly honor in 2022 after the Gades took home six such honors in 2021 (two Players of the Week, four Pitchers of the Week).
After Monday’s off day, the Renegades are back in action on Tuesday night hosting the Jersey Shore BlueClaws at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. as the Gades celebrate Back to Basics night on a Tradition Tuesday. For tickets and more information, slide to www.hvrenegades.com.
