Scrappers Drop First Game to Auburn Since June

Auburn, NY- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers saw a 2-0 lead disappear when the Auburn Doubledays scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Auburn never looked back on their way to a 9-6 win. The loss ends an eight game winning streak against Auburn for the Scrappers.   
            The Scrappers took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Jesse Berardi doubled to start the game. Nolan Jones then homered to right for his second homerun of the season. The two run homer put the Scrappers up 2-0.    
            In the bottom of the first the Doubledays would take control of the game by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. Jake Scudder, Jeyner Baez, Kameron Esthey and Austin Guibor all contributed RBI hits. Scrappers' starter Francisco Perez would be chased from the game with only two outs in the first inning.    
            Auburn added a solo run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a homerun from Omar Meregildo to push the lead out to 7-2.
            In the bottom of the seventh inning the Doubledays added two more RBI from Baez and Armond Upshaw.
            The Scrappers wouldn't go quietly in the top of the ninth inning. Ulysses Cantu started the inning with a walk. Then with two outs Jonathan Laureano singled. Simeon Lucas followed with a two run single to score Cantu and Laureano. Jonathan Rodriguez capped the scoring with a two run homerun to cut the deficit to the final score of 9-6.
            Perez (3-3) took the loss in just 0.2 innings of work. He allowed six earned runs on just three hits. Perez walked one and struck out two. Riley Echols went 2.1 innings in relief. Echols allowed three hits and struck out four. Cameron Mingo went a season high 4.0 innings in relief. Mingo allowed three earned runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three. Jonathan Teaney pitched a scoreless inning as well. He allowed two hits and struck out two.
            Despite the loss, the Scrappers stay in first place in the Pinckney Division. With a West Virginia doubleheader split, the Scrappers and Blackbears are tied for first.     
  The Scrappers will look to tie up the series in Auburn on Wednesday night. Kirk McCarty will get his first professional start for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is set for 7:05.
