Morgantown, WV- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers bats were held silent for the first eight innings on Monday night against the West Virginia Black Bears. However, in the top of the ninth inning the Scrappers would rally for seven runs with the help of four walks for their second come from behind win of the season, 7-2 over the Black Bears.
Both of West Virginia's runs would come with the help of some shaky defense from Mahoning Valley. An error in the second inning and another error in the sixth inning would lead to both runs.
Black Bears' starter Scooter Hightower limited the Scrappers to just four hits through the first eight inning. Hightower would give way to the bullpen in the top of the ninth. The bullpen would allow 12 Scrappers to come to the plate while scoring seven runs.
Simeon Lucas started the inning with a single. With one out Will Benson would walk. Nolan Jones would then pinch hit and also draw a walk to load the bases. With two outs Tyler Friis had the at bat of the season so far when he drew a walk in an 11 pitch at bat to score the Scrappers first run of the night. Ernie Clement was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. The eventual game winning run would score when Hosea Nelson followed with a bases loaded walk. The Scrappers would break the game open when Oscar Gonzalez doubled to score drive in three runs. Austen Wade drove in the final run of the night for the Scrappers on an RBI single.
Francisco Perez took a no decision in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed two unearned runs on six hits. Perez walked two and struck out three. Kyle Nelson (2-1) picked up the win in 2.2 innings of relief. Nelson did not allow a hit, run or a walk. He struck out three. Jonathan Teaney then worked a perfect ninth inning to close out the game. Teaney struck out one.
The Scrappers now return home just one game back in the Pinckney Division and a half a game back in the wild card chase. The Scrappers return home on Tuesday night to host Batavia. First pitch is set for 7:05 as Sam Hentges will get the start. Tuesday is another All You Can Eat Tuesday presented by Handel's Ice Cream and Hershey's.
