Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, presented their annual team awards before the season finale on Monday afternoon. The team awards are voted on by the fans and are handed out in four different categories: Most Valuable Player, Pitcher of the Year, 10th Player, and Citizen of the Year.
Most Valuable Player -
Barfield led the Sea Dogs in homers, RBI, on-base percentage (.359), slugging percentage (.584), total bases (201) and game-winning RBI (14). Jeremy was named to the Eastern League's Year-End All-Star team. His 27 homers were the most since Portland became a Red Sox affiliate in 2003. In July, Barfield hit .336, with his 12 homers, 33 RBI and 78 total bases being franchise monthly records, earning Eastern League Player of the Month honors. On September 2nd, Barfield earned a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket and went 4-for-5 with a homer in his first game with the PawSox. The Red Sox signed Barfield from the Sugar Land Skeeters on May 25, 2017 and assigned to Portland.
Pitcher of the Year -
Poyner began the season with the High-A Salem Red Sox, going 2-0, 2.45 ERA in 16 games. The lefty made his Double-A debut on June 3rd at Binghamton, fanning four batters over two perfect innings. Poyner posted a 0.27 ERA (ER/33.0 IP) in his first 23 games with the Sea Dogs, and is scoreless in 24 of 27 outings. Poyner has fanned 52 batters over 38.1 innings, converting nine of 10 save chances in 27 games. Bobby was a 14th round pick by the Red Sox in the 2015 June Draft out of the University of Florida.
10th Player Award -
Sturgeon has been a member of the Sea Dogs since 2015, excelling as a terrific defensive outfielder. Over his last 55 games, Sturgeon has hit over .300 with all five of his home runs. Sturgeon has reached base safely in 88 of 117 games, appearing in all three- outfield spots. Cole has committed only three errors in 109 starts in the outfield, and picking up four outfield assists. Sturgeon was a 10th round pick by the Red Sox in the 2014 June Draft out of the University of the Louisville.
Citizen of the Year -
McAvoy volunteered for various community appearances at local schools and participated in multiple baseball clinics held at Hadlock Field. Kevin could often be found at the autograph table in the concourse before games and signing more autographs along the picnic area and at the first base gate after games. McAvoy made 21 appearances with Portland this season, going 6-8 with a 4.31 ERA. The righty notched 11 quality starts on the season. McAvoy has been a terrific teammate and pillar to the community in his two years with the Sea Dogs. Kevin was a 4th round pick by the Red Sox in the 2014 June Draft out of Bryant University, and was the highest draft pick in school history.
