CLINTON, IA (June 22, 2017) - It took a come from behind win but the Clinton LumberKings started the second half of the Midwest League with 6-2 triumph over the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night at Ashford University. The LumberKings (1-0, 32-36) rode a four-run fourth inning to their seventh straight win over Beloit (0-1, 32-28) in Clinton this season.
Clinton fell behind early, allowing single runs to score in the top of the second and third innings. Snappers center fielder JaVon Shelby pushed the first run of the game across with an RBI double in the second. Kyle Nowlin drove home the second and final run of the game for Beloit with an RBI single to left.
Trailing 2-0, the LumberKings could not muster a base runner through the first three innings against Snappers starter Kyle Twomey. In the bottom of the fourth, Luis Rengifo led-off with Clinton's first hit of the night a solo home run to left center field. His sixth home run of the season.
Clinton continued to pile on in the inning. Yojhan Quevedo doubled with two out in the inning and moved to third when the LumberKings loaded the bases on a Nick Thurman walk and Gareth Morgan single. A passed ball scored Quevedo to tie the game and Nick Zammarelli III cleared the bases with a two run double to right that put the LumberKings on top for good.
Zammarelli's double chased Twomey (0-1) from the game as the lefty was hung with his first loss of the season despite his strong start.
Nick Wells settled down for Clinton following the early Snappers runs to earn his third win of the season. In five innings of work, Wells (3-6) allowed two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four.
The LumberKings added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run rally that was capped on a Bryson Brigman RBI infield single.
Ronald Dominguez, activated from the disabled list before the game, and Michael Koval worked four shutout innings of relief to preserve the win and give the LumberKings a 1-0 start to the second half of the season.
