SEMPLE DAZZLES IN HUDSON VALLEY DEBUT
New addition Shawn Semple allowed one run and struck out 11 Jersey Shore BlueClaws as the Hudson Valley Renegades grabbed a 3-2 victory on Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium.
Semple gave up two hits and one walk over six innings of work to pick up the win (1-0). Nelson Alvarez pitched two innings and allowed a run. Derek Craft threw a scoreless ninth to notch his first save.
The Gades got their runs in the first two innings. Josh Smith led off the bottom of the first with a single on the first pitch of the frame. He stole a base, moved to third on a single by Anthony Seigler, and scored on a Josh Breaux sacrifice fly.
In the second, Oliver Dunn homered to right to open the inning. Frederick Cuevas walked, stole second and third, and scored on a groundout off the bat of Isaiah Pasteur.
All of the Hudson Valley damage was done off BlueClaws' starter Ethan Lindow, who pitched 4.2 innings and took the loss (0-2).
The Claws scored on a Herbert Iser home run in the fifth off Semple. They got their second run in the eighth on a leadoff triple by Jonathan Guzman and a ground out by Iser.
Jersey Shore threatened in the ninth on back-to-back two-out walks. The BlueClaws had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before Craft induced a groundout from DJ Stewart to end the ballgame.
The two teams meet again on Friday a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. Fireworks will end the night following the completion of the second seven-inning game.
