San Antonio, TX – Battling to get above .500 for the first time since May 15, the Sod Poodles suffered a slight setback, falling 7-2 in San Antonio on Wednesday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
The Sod Poodles looked poised to possibly jump on the Missions early, but a play at the plate haltered what could have been an early swing in momentum. After drawing a leadoff walk, Corbin Carroll moved into scoring position on a Jorge Barrosa single. Two strikeouts sent Blaze Alexander to the plate. The D-backs' No. 24 rated prospect singled and sent Carroll barreling around third to home, a throw to the plate beat Carroll on a bang-bang play to end the inning, keeping Amarillo off the scoreboard.
Two hits and two errors in the field helped keep the inning alive for the Missions to strike first, taking a 1-0 lead after the first. A two-out solo home run made it 2-0 after the second.
Barrosa brought the Soddies within one run with his sixth home run of the year. It was a solo shot to left-center field, getting the Sod Poodles on the scoreboard and ultimately as close as they would come to the Missions' lead.
A five-hit, four-run inning including the second home run surrendered by Sod Poodles' starter Bryce Jarvis brought an end to the D-backs' No. 7 rated prospect's night after 2.2 IP and six earned runs. The right-hander did strike out four of the eight outs he would record for the outing.
Similar to Tuesday night, the early outburst was cooled off by the bullpens. The two teams would combine for just seven hits over the next six innings. Included in those seven hits was Carroll's third triple in as many games. The D-backs' No. 1 rated prospect became the first Sod Poodle ever to triple in three straight games. He's up to seven on the year, and has catapulted to a tie for second in all minor league baseball with his seven three-baggers.
Josh Green replaced Jarvis on the bump and tossed 3.1 IP of one hit ball to help keep the bullpen fresh for the rest of the series. Following Green were lefties Yorvin Pantoja and Junior Garcia. Pantoja gave up two hits and a run while Garcia closed the game with a scoreless frame.
The Sod Poodles and Missions continue their series with game three scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch tomorrow, June 16 from Nelson Wolff Stadium. Amarillo will throw RHP Deyni Olivero (0-4, 8.36 ERA) against a former Sod Poodle in RHP Lake Bachar. The Missions' starter was a member of the 2019 inaugural season team roster.
Notes:
*Y'all Wanna See Some Real Speed: *Corbin Carroll extended his hitting streak just as he did yesterday, with a triple. His seventh triple of the year is one shy of tying the Sod Poodles season record set by Alec Thomas who hit eight in 72 games played. Carroll has seven in 51 games played this year. He leads the Texas League, Double-A, and is now tied for second in MiLB in triples.
Long Relief: Right-hander Josh Green tossed 3.1 IP in relief on Wednesday, setting the new season-high for innings pitched by a reliever. He passed Justin Vernia by an out. Vernia tossed 3.0 IP on 4/27 @ NWA for the longest relief outing this year.
The Ole Arm Barn: The trio of Josh Green, Yorvin Pantoja, and Junior Garcia combined to allow just one run over their final 5.1 IP. It marks the ninth game in the last 14 games that the bullpen has allowed three or fewer runs and the second straight time this series allowing just one earned run.
