After their last series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp ended with the Tides only winning two out of the seven games, the Tides came ready for this series. They came out with a three-run lead after five innings and carried a shutout through the seventh inning. The Tides unfortunately lost 4-3 after the Jumbo Shrimp rallied four runs down in the final two innings to win.
The Tides displayed great defense to hold the Jumbo Shrimp even after they had the bases loaded at one point. Three double plays were turned in the first four innings alone for the Tides. The first double play ended the second inning. A wild pitch and a walk thrown by Mike Baumann put two baserunners on for the Jumbo Shrimp, but the Tides turned a 6-4-3 play to end the inning.
Two errors by the Jumbo Shrimp in the second inning allowed the Tides to go up two runs. Robert Neustrom singled and Zach Jarrett reached on a catcher’s interference to put two on first and second. With two on, McCoy grabbed his 15th double of the year, tying him for first on the team in doubles.

The third inning began with a walk drawn by Jumbo Shrimp second baseman Eddy Alvarez, but a Nick Fortes ground out was turned into a double play by third baseman Rylan Bannon, second baseman Pat Valaika, and first baseman Tyler Nevin. With two out, Baumann finished the inning for the Jumbo Shrimp with a strikeout of first baseman Lewin Diaz.
Bannon hit his 10th home run in 10 games as he continued to be hot for the Tides. Bannon’s blast to deep left put the Tides up 3-0 in the fifth inning, making this his 14th home run on the year. As August 9 - 15 Triple-A East Player of the Week, Bannon is staying hot.
In the eighth inning, after it was looking like a shutout win for the Tides. The Jumbo Shrimp tied the game at three runs a piece. A hit-by-pitch put Fortes on first and Dustin Fowler singled to put runners in scoring position. A three-run homer by Brian Miller was all the Jumbo Shrimp needed to gain momentum and tie the game.
Alvarez homered to put the Jumbo Shrimp over the hump they needed to win over the Tides. He went 1-for-4 on the night with his home run being his only hit. The Tides gave up nine hits with only one batter for the Jumbo Shrimp not having a hit.
Tides Starter Mike Baumann struck out five and walked three. He held the Jumbo Shrimp scoreless in the 5.0 innings he pitched only allowing four hits. Reliever Dusten Knight is given the loss after giving up the game-winning home run to the Jumbo Shrimp.
The Tides tied their season record for double plays with them turning three double plays against the Jumbo Shrimp. The last time the Tides turned three double plays in a game was on August 12 against the Memphis Redbirds, where the Tides lost 7-6 in 11 innings, after the Tides couldn’t come back down four runs.
Game two against the Jumbo Shrimp will be August 25, with the game starting at 7:05 at Harbor Park. Join the Tides as they host “The Office Night” at Harbor Park, with Creed Bratton. For the next two weeks, the Tides will be at home: hosting the Jumbo Shrimp this week and then hosting the Charlotte Knights, with that series beginning on August 31.
