Shew Strikes Out Seven as Chiefs Fall 5-3

Peoria, IL - Anthony Shew struck out seven in his Peoria Chiefs debut, but the Fort Wayne TinCaps went on to beat the Chiefs 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park. The Chiefs drop to 14-10 in the second half and 44-49 overall and will play the series finale on Monday against the TinCaps with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
    The Chiefs took a lead in the first inning against TinCaps starter Ronald Bolaños. Kramer Robertson led off with a single to right and Stefan Trosclair walked in the next at-bat. Fort Wayne quickly recorded two outs when Dylan Carlson struck out and Robertson was caught stealing third on the same play while Trosclair moved to second. Ryan McCarvel drove a ball to the center field wall for a double to drive in Trosclair and give Peoria a 1-0 advantage. 

  Peoria extended their lead in the fifth inning with Bolanos still on the mound for Fort Wayne. Mick Fennell led off the inning with a single to right field and Robertson singled to left. Trosclair walked to load the bases and Carlson brought home Fennell with a ground-out to shortstop that ended Bolanos' outing for the TinCaps and gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Mark Zimmerman entered the game with Robertson on third and Trosclair at second, but struck out McCarvel and got J.R. Davis to line-out to left field to end the inning and the threat.
    The TinCaps overtook Peoria in the sixth with Shew still on the bump. With one out, Buddy Reed singled and Reinaldo Ilarraza walked. Fernando Tatis Jr. clubbed a two-strike pitch over the left field wall to give Fort Wayne a 3-2 lead on his 16^th home run of the season.
    The Chiefs tied the game against TinCaps reliever Wilmer Torres in the eighth. Plummer collected his second hit of the game on a double driven off the right field wall. Matt Fiedler singled up-the-middle with two strikes to plate Plummer and tie the game at 3-3.
    Fort Wayne took the lead again in the ninth inning against Chiefs relievers Ronnie Williams and Yeison Medina. With one out Williams walked Suwinski and Nate Easley doubled to left. Medina entered the game and allowed a single to right by Tyler Benson that scored Suwinski and moved Easley to third. Reed lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right field that brought home Easley and gave the TinCaps a 5-3. Benson tried to steal second with Ilarraza at the plate, but was thrown out by McCarvel to end the inning.
    Shew went 6 2/3 innings in a no decision, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Williams (3-5) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings. Medina pitched 2/3 of an inning while allowing one hit without a run.
Notes… Shew's seven strikeouts are the most by a Chiefs pitcher in their 2017 debut… Including his four starts for State College this season, Shew has struck out at least six hitters and lasted at least five innings in every start he's made this season… His 6 2/3 innings of work tie a career high… Plummer made his 10^th start of the season in left field, he's played 42 games in center… Fennell hit ninth in the lineup for the first time this season, he joined the Chiefs on June 29… Robertson has four multi-hit games this season, three of them have during the current home stand… Plummer had his fifth multi-hit game and second in a row, and had a single and a double in each game… Fiedler had his second multi-hit game of the season, which was also his first two-hit game for the Chiefs… The Chiefs will host the TinCaps for the series finale on Monday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch… Peoria will send LH Ian Oxnevad (3-8, 4.14) to the mound against TinCaps RH Michel Baez (2-0, 0.00)… The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pregame show at 11:45 a.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Android… The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Radio Network in the Tune-In Radio App.
