Delmarva Completes Largest Comeback Win of the Season

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (48-74, 26-32) came from behind to walk off the Salem Red Sox (66-58, 32-26) 10-9 in 11 innings.

The Red Sox used the long ball to strike first in the opening inning as Brooks Brannon sent one over the right-field wall to make it 1-0.

Marvina Alcantara grew the lead to 3-0 in the third with a two-run single with the bases loaded. The advantage grew in the fourth with an RBI double by Karim Ayubi and a two-run extra-base hit by Kelvin Diaz, putting Delmarva behind 6-0.

The Shorebirds began their comeback effort in the sixth with three runs coming home on three bases-loaded walks with Griff O'Ferrall, Vance Honeycutt, and Ethan Anderson all picking up RBIs to make it 6-3. An additional run scored on a wild pitch to pull the Shorebirds within two at 6-4.

Delmarva tied the game in the seventh, using a sacrifice fly by Griff O'Ferrall and an RBI single by Vance Honeycutt to level the game at six.

Yeiber Cartaya sparked Delmarva's comeback by tossing four scoreless innings after entering the sixth, keeping the Red Sox off the board for the rest of regulation. Delmarva could not plate a run in the eighth or ninth, which forced the game into extras.

Salem scored immediately in the top of the tenth on an RBI single by Franklin Arias, giving the Red Sox a 7-6 lead.

Down to their final out, Elis Cuevas kept the game alive for the Shorebirds with a game-tying RBI double to score Braylin Tavera, extending the game into the 11th tied at seven.

The Red Sox countered with a two-run homer by Andy Lugo in the top of the 11th to go ahead 9-7.

With Delmarva down to their final out again in the home half, Ethan Anderson pulled the Shorebirds within a run with an RBI double, putting the winning run at third and the winning run at second. Braylin Tavera delivered the biggest hit of the night immediately after by dropping a single into right-center to score both runs, completing Delmarva's largest comeback win as they walked off the Red Sox 10-9 in 11 innings.

Joe Glassey (1-0) earned the win for the Shorebirds with Fraymi De Leon (0-1) suffering the loss.

Delmarva goes for the series lead on Saturday as Keeler Morfe takes the mound versus JoJo Ingrassia for the Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m
