Delmarva Walked Off in Nine Inning Thriller
COLUMBIA, SC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (25-33) suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Columbia Fireflies (29-30) on Saturday night.
GAME 1
After a scoreless first inning, Delmarva found themselves down big after the second inning as the Fireflies scored seven times, bringing a total of 12 batters to the plate in the inning to put the Shorebirds behind 7-0 after two frames.
The lead would grow to 9-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Brett Squires and a sacrifice fly by Austin Charles.
Delmarva would attempt to get back in the game in the top of the fifth as they scored four runs with Enrique Bradfield Jr. plating the first one on a fielder's choice as Tejada touched home on the play. Jake Cunningham then brought home a pair with a double. Stiven Acevedo scored Cunningham moments later from second base with an RBI single to make it a 9-4 game.
The Fireflies would get two of those runs back as Brett Squires and Lizandro Rodriguez each picked up an RBI to give Columbia an 11-4 advantage after five innings.
The offense for the Shorebirds was unable to overcome the early deficit and would fall in the first game of the doubleheader 11-4.
Oscar Rayo (5-2) was the winning pitcher in relief for the Fireflies with starting pitcher Luis De Leon (3-1) taking the loss for Delmarva.
GAME 2
The Fireflies once again put the Shorebirds in an early hole as they scored twice in the opening inning on an RBI double by Trevor Werner and a bases-loaded walk to Hayden Dunhurst that made it 2-0 after an inning of play.
Delmarva would counterpunch in the top of the third as they put three runs on the board with Tavian Josenberger starting it off with an RBI triple to plate Adam Crampton. Josenberger then scored a few batters lately as Matthew Etzel singled back up the middle to make it a 2-2 game. Jalen Vasquez then pushed Delmarva in front with a three-bagger of his own as Etzel came into score from first, giving the Shorebirds a 3-2 advantage.
Columbia would grab the lead back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to RBIs from Daniel Vazquez and Spencer Nivens to make it a 4-3 game in favor of Columbia.
Stiven Acevedo would give the right back to Delmarva with one swing in the top of the sixth as he belted his third home run of the series over the wall in left field to push the Shorebirds back in front 5-4.
In the seventh inning, with the Fireflies down to their final strike, Trevor Werner delivered in the clutch as he hit a game-tying home run to even the game at five, sending the game into extras.
In the top of the eighth, it took one pitch for Matthew Etzel to put the Shorebirds back in the lead as he singled home Stiven Acevedo from second base, giving Delmarva a 6-5 edge.
The Fireflies had an answer for that run as they scored the tying run on a balk, forcing a ninth inning.
Brayan Hernandez gave Delmarva the lead back in the top of the ninth as he scored Noelberth Romero with a double down the left field line, making it 7-6 Shorebirds.
However, Columbia would have the final punch in the back-and-forth affair as Jared Dickey tied the game with an RBI single. Moments later, with the bases loaded and one out, Brett Squires hit a game-winning grand slam to win in the ninth for the Fireflies by a score of 11-7.
Nicholas Regalado (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Columbia with Randy Beriguete (0-3) suffering the loss for the Shorebirds.
Delmarva will now look to salvage a series and a .500 record on the 12-game road trip on Sunday evening as Juan Rojas gets the ball in the finale against Mauricio Feliz for the Fireflies with first pitch at 5:05 p.m.
