Delmarva Suffers Fifth Straight Defeat
*FREDERICKSBURG, VA: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (23-24) and Fredericksburg Nationals (21-25) needed extra innings once again on Thursday night but Delmarva fell just short as they were walked off for the second time this week by the Fred Nats by a score of 8-7 in ten innings.
Fredericksburg put Delmarva behind early by scoring twice in the first on an RBI double by Sammy Infante followed by a sacrifice by Paul Witt to make it 2-0 Nationals after an inning.
The Shorebirds would get one of those runs back in the top of the second as Brayan Hernandez cranked a solo home run to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
But the Fred Nats countered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBI doubles by Daylem Lile and Sammy Infante to push their lead to 4-1.
The Nationals scored in a third straight inning in the next frame on a two-bagger by Geraldi Diaz to put Delmarva in a 5-1 hole.
In the fifth, the Shorebirds began their comeback attempt as Isaac Bellony scored two with a triple down the right-field line to pull the Shorebirds within two at 5-3. Bellony then scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson De Los Santos to make it a 5-4 game.
The lead for Fredericksburg was pushed back to two in the sixth on an RBI single by Brady House to make it 6-4.
But Carter Young delivered in the next half inning as sent a two-run homer into the Delmarva bullpen to tie the game at six.
The Fred Nats used a home run of their own from Elijah Green in the bottom of the seventh as a solo blast put the 'Birds behind again 7-6.
With the Shorebirds still down one in the top of the ninth, Angel Tejada came through with one of his top moments as he sent a solo home run over the wall in left field to tie the game at seven.
The game would then head to extras after Yaqui Rivers struck out the side in the ninth. In the tenth, the Shorebirds failed to score and the Nationals took advantage as Armando Cruz doubled off the right field wall to score the winning run, sinking Delmarva to their fifth straight defeat as the Fred Nats won 8-7.
Jose Atencio (2-4) earned the win for the Nationals with Yaqui Rivera (1-4) taking the loss.
The Shorebirds hit three home runs on Thursday night with Brayan Hernandez, Carter Young, and Angel Tejada each sending one over the fence. Isaac Bellony finished with two hits, a double, and a triple along with two RBIs. Six of the seven hits for the offense in the game went for extra bases.
Delmarva will attempt to end their season-long losing streak on Friday night as Jared Beck takes the mound to face Bryan Caceras for the Nationals with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
