Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, suffered their first defeat as defending champions on Friday, falling 2-1 to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in twelve innings.

Jacksonville (1-1) evened the series with sharp pitching, holding the Generals (1-1) scoreless for the game's last eight frames.
Right-hander Emilio Vargas made his first start of the year for Jackson, tossing five innings while allowing only one run on one hit to the Jumbo Shrimp. The 2018 California League Pitcher of the Year began his 2019 campaign by retiring the first nine hitters he faced, but a lead-off double in the fourth inning eventually led to Jacksonville scoring their first run on a sacrifice fly. Vargas struck out four batters and walked just one, giving way to a succession of scoreless appearances by Generals relievers. Bud Jeter, Damien Magnifico, Lucas Luetge, and Michael Kohn all provided run-free cameos for Jackson, with the Jumbo Shrimp eventually breaking through against right-hander Mason McCullough (0-1, 0.00 ERA) in the bottom of the twelfth.
At the plate, Jackson struck first: An RBI double from outfielder Marcus Wilson in the top of the fourth plated Jazz Chisholm with the night's first run. Wilson's RBI was his third in two nights, but it would prove to be the only tally for the visitors, who went 2-for-20 with men in scoring position and managed only one extra-base hit. Second baseman Andy Young recorded the only multi-hit night, collecting a double and two singles from the leadoff spot in the defeat. Jackson went hitless in all three extra innings, allowing Jacksonville reliever Elvis Araujo (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to snag his first victory of the year
