Monte Harrison hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to deliver a walk-off 6-5 win for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (26-36) over the Biloxi Shuckers (38-26) on Monday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. LHP Kodi Medeiros tossed six innings of one run ball in the loss and hit a grand slam for the Shuckers in the loss.
It was scoreless in the top of the fifth when Jake Gatewood sliced a ball to center field that got past Harrison. Gatewood motored all the way around the bases and scored on an inside-the-park home run, his league-leading twelfth home run of the season. Two batters later, Jake Hager drew a walk, followed by a pair of singles from Trent Grisham and Tyler Heineman to load the bases. On the first pitch from RHP Kolton Mahoney, Medeiros launched a ball over the right field fence for a grand slam, giving Biloxi a 5-0 lead. It was his first career hit and the seventh grand slam in Shuckers history.
Medeiros allowed just one run in his start. Peter O'Brien homered to straightaway centerfield in the bottom of the sixth, his sixth of the season. The lefty finished off his outing with a strikeout of Brian Schales, putting the finishing touches on an eight-strikeout night.
O'Brien brought the Jumbo Shrimp within two in the bottom of the eighth inning. After a leadoff walk to Isan Díaz, O'Brien hit his second home run of the night to tighten the score at 5-3. O'Brien has homered in six consecutive games, tying the Southern League record for most consecutive games with a home run.
RHP Nate Griep (L, 0-1) came in to pitch the ninth for the Shuckers. After a walk to Mason Davis, Griep struck out pinch hitter Eric Jagielo for the first out. Cade Gotta walked, bringing up Harrison. Facing his former teammate, the centerfielder jumped on the first pitch from Griep, hitting a home run to left to end the game.
Biloxi has a quick turnaround for the series finale on Tuesday afternoon at 12:05 PM EST. The Shuckers will send RHP Trey Supak (0-2, 6.60) to the mound against RHP Robert Dugger (0-1, 6.19). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
