The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (49-47) scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to top the Biloxi Shuckers (35-61) 9-1 on Sunday evening at Blue Wahoos Stadium. With their 61st defeat, the Shuckers will have their first losing season in franchise history.
Griffin Conine put the Wahoos on the board in the bottom of the first inning. RHP Justin Bullock (L, 2-3) had Conine in a two-strike, two-out count with a man on first when Conine connected for an opposite-field home run, his tenth of the season, putting the Wahoos up 2-0.
Biloxi had a chance to tie the game in the top of the second inning. Alexander Palma started the inning with a single and David Fry followed with a walk, bringing up Tristen Lutz. The Shuckers’ outfielder doubled over the head of Conine in left, scoring Palma, but Fry was thrown out at home attempting to score from first. LHP Antonio Velez (W, 1-0) induced a pair of fly outs, stranding the tying run at second.
Pensacola moved their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the second and an RBI single from Zack Kone to make it 3-1 in favor of the Wahoos. Conine hit his second home run of the day in the third, a solo shot to extend the Wahoos’ lead to 4-1. The Blue Wahoos would open the game up in the bottom of the fourth, sending nine men to the plate and scoring four runs on a pair of hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded and a two-RBI single from Chris Chinea, putting Pensacola up 8-1.
The Shuckers were able to put at least one man on base in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth inning, but was unable to push across another run in the game.
