Shuckers Open Homestand with 5-3 Loss to Biscuits

BILOXI, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers (10-6) dropped the first game of a five-game series at MGM Park against the Montgomery Biscuits (5-11) on Saturday night by a final of 5-3. The Shuckers mustered just two hits a night after banging out a season-high 19. LHP Génesis Cabrera (W, 1-2) was lights out over seven innings for the Biscuits.
Montgomery struck first against starter RHP Cody Ponce (L, 1-1) in the top of the first inning. Brett Sullivan doubled with a pair of runners on to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Michael Russell singled in a run for Montgomery in the second, and Jermaine Palacios' cracked bat single in the fourth plated Nathan Lukes. Despite the four runs charged to Ponce, the Shuckers defense provided aid by nabbing three baserunners to end three of the first four innings.
Cabrera did not allow a hit until the fourth, though the lefty issued four walks throughout his start. After a Troy Stokes Jr. single and a pair of two-out walks to Jake Gatewood and Blake Allemand, Dylan Moore speared a ball off the wall in right centerfield to score all three runners. Cabrera worked around those runs, and the Moore triple was the last hit the Shuckers would see on the night.
The Biscuits added an insurance run in the ninth on a wild pitch by RHP Nate Griep that brought in Sullivan. RHP Mike Franco (S, 1) recorded a six-out save, striking out three of the six batter he faced over the eighth and ninth innings. Montgomery pitching set down 16 of the final 17 batters they faced.
The Shuckers look to even the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM CT. LHP Wade Miley (0-0, 0.00) will start for Biloxi and oppose RHP Zach Lee (1-0, 1.62) on a Military Salute Sunday.
