The Biloxi Shuckers (13-25) were shutout by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (20-17) in a 3-0 defeat on Wednesday night at Toyota Field.
One of the Shuckers best chances to score came in the first inning. Tristen Lutz led off the game with a double off the top of the center field wall and moved to third two batters later on an infield single by Payton Henry. However, RHP Cooper Criswell (W, 3-3) struck out the next two batters to end the Shuckers threat. Crisewll would strike out a career-high 14 batters over 6.2 innings of scoreless work.
LHP Nick Bennett (L, 1-2) got the start for the Shuckers and pitched well but allowed a solo home run to the former big leaguer Dalton Pompey in the first inning. Bennett induced a pair of double plays during his outing and allowed just one other run in his five frames of work, a solo home run to Michael Curz in the bottom of the fifth.
The Trash Pandas added their third and final run on a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Criswell out of the game in the top of the seventh, the Shuckers immediately had a scoring opportunity, as LHP Adrian Almeida (H, 1) walked the first two batters he faced with two outs in the frame, bringing Cam Devanney to the plate as the tying run. The Shuckers second baseman worked a 2-0 count but flied to centerfield, ending the inning.
Biloxi threatened again in the eighth thanks again to a combination of Lutz and Henry. Lutz singled to right with one out against RHP Nathan Bates (S, 1) and Henry followed two batters later with a double to right, putting two men in scoring position with two outs. With Alexander Palma batting, Bates delivered a pitch that bounced away from Cruz, but the Trash Pandas catcher recovered and flipped to Bates at home plate, who tagged out Lutz as he attempted to score from third.
The Shuckers resume their series against the Trash Pandas on Thursday night at Toyota Field. RHP Jesus Castillo (0-1, 7.71) takes the hill for Biloxi opposite Trash Pandas’ LHP Jhonathan Diaz (1-0, 1.93) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9
