LANSING, Mich. – Will Simpson and Henry Bolte homered, but the Cedar Rapids Kernels (33-24) piled up 20 hits in a 15-7 series-opening victory over the Lansing Locos (30-28) on Tuesday night at Jackson® Field™.
One year prior, on June 1, 2023, the Kernels had set the Lansing franchise record for most runs scored by an opponent in a 24-5 win at Jackson® Field™.
On this night, the Minnesota Twins’ High-A affiliate knocked out Luis Carrasco with a seven-run third inning, hung three runs on Dylan Hall in the fifth, scored twice against Yehizon Sanchez in the seventh, and clubbed two homers in a three-run rally off Jack Owen in the eighth.
The wall of offense overwhelmed a Lansing effort built on strong performances from Bolte (2-for-4, 3 runs, walk, team-leading ninth home run, team-leading 23rd stolen base); Simpson (3-for-4, two runs, walk, fifth homer of the year); and Luke Mann (3-for-4, 3 singles).
With the result, Lansing fell five games back of division-leading Lake County, which shut out Fort Wayne, 1-0.
The second game of the series is a Wing Wednesday / Dog Days of Summer, with right-hander Blaze Pontes facing Kernels southpaw Christian MacLeod at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. For tickets and further information, visit milb.com/lansing or call (517) 485-4500.
