MOBILE, Ala. (July 19, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, fell 12-1 to the Chattanooga Lookouts in the series opener Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The BayBears (42-52 overall, 12-13 second half) plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut Chattanooga's lead to 4-1. Michael Hermosillo led off the inning with a base hit, took second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jose Rojas single.
However, Chattanooga (62-34, 20-6) hit six home runs in the game, including three in a seven-run eighth inning, to put the game out of reach. Nick Gordon hit a two-run homer in the third inning to open the scoring. Jonathan Rodriguez hit a pair of homers in the fifth and seventh. In the eighth, T.J. White began the inning with a home run, LaMonte Wade Jr hit a grand slam, and Andy Wilkins hit a two-run homer two batters later.
Stephen Gonsalves (6-3) earned the win, falling just one out shy of a quality start. He allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Todd Van Steensel and Nick Anderson combined to retire 10 straight batters to end the game.
Jaime Barria (1-2) gave up a pair of two-run homers and matched his career-high with 10 hits allowed in 4 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out five batters in the loss.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Chattanooga Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell (5-6, 4.41 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Kohl Stewart (3-4, 3.83 ERA) for the Lookouts.
