MOBILE, Ala. (May 28, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Birmingham Barons 9-4 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the BayBears (23-27) sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits. Alberto Triunfel and Josè Briceño each had RBI singles, Michael Hermosillo drove in two runs with a double, and Forrestt Allday drew his second bases-loaded walk of the series. Allday scored the final run of the frame on a dropped third strike.
Briceno and Hermosillo both had three RBI in the game, providing two-thirds of the run support for Jake Jewell (3-3). Jewell recorded his third quality start, giving up two runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. He has received 35 runs of support in six starts, more than any other BayBears starter.
Mobile native Toby Thomas collected his first Double-A hit for Birmingham, an RBI single in the top of the ninth, and drove in two runs in the game. Despite allowing a pair of two-out runs in the inning, Justin Anderson bounced back to get the final out, and the Barons left the bases loaded.
Despite going 0-for-3, Allday drew a pair of walks and extended his on-base streak to 31 games. It is the longest active streak in the Southern League.
