ASHEVILLE, N.C. (April 18, 2019) - Jake Anchia homered and six Power batters recorded multi-hit games as the offense exploded for 12 runs on 18 hits to pummel the Asheville Tourists, 12-7, Thursday night at McCormick Field.
Cesar Izturis Jr. strung together a career-high three RBI, while all nine hitters recorded at least one base hit and seven scored at least one run.
Asheville (6-9) struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot from Will Golsan to give the Tourists an early 1-0 lead. Asheville would strike for two more in the second inning to take a 3-0 edge thanks to a two-run double from Golsan in his second at-bat.
West Virginia (9-5) answered with a run of their own in the third when Onil Pena's single drove in Jarred Kelenic following his two-out double to make it 3-1.
The Power offense really started to heat up in the top of the fourth. Jake Anchia led off the inning with his second home run of the season to bring West Virginia back within one. Izturis Jr. and Charlie McConnell followed with a pair of RBI singles to thrust the Power ahead 4-3.
The momentum carried into the fifth as Manny Pazos brought in Anchia with a single, and a bases-loaded walk issued to Izturis Jr. increased the lead to 6-3.
In the sixth, the Power exploded for their largest inning of the season, with six runs on six hits, both season highs for a single inning, and 10 batters coming to the plate. Bobby Honeyman, Izturis Jr., Kelenic and Ryan Ramiz each tallied an RBI single, while McConnell brought in Honeyman on a fielding error, to blow the game open at 12-3 after a 33-minute half inning.
From there, the Power bullpen took over, with Benjamin Onyshko and Sal Biasi (1-0) both allowing just one run over each of their two innings of work. Things got a little more interesting in the ninth when Asheville scored two runs and loaded the bases on Dayeison Arias. Nolan Hoffman (S,1) entered with two outs and the bases juiced for his first save situation of the season, and delivered with a strike out of Willie MacIver to close out the 12-7 win.
The Power's 12 runs are the most for the club since June 30, 2018, at Hagerstown, while Thursday was the first time they have totaled 18 or more hits in a game since July 22, 2017, against Lexington.
West Virginia continues their three-game set with Asheville Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at McCormick Field. LHP Steven Moyers (1-1, 4.50 ERA) heads to the bump for the Power, while the Tourists go with righty Riley Pint (0-1, 13.50 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
The next homestand for West Virginia gets underway Monday, April 22, against the Columbia Fireflies and then the Tourists later in the week. The highlight of the homestand comes Saturday, April 27, which is Will Ferrell Day at Appalachian Power Park, and includes a Josh Bell cowbell giveaway for the first 1,000 fans through the gates. Cubs have MLB stars AND loaded farm system
