Skid ends at four with offensive outburst

SOUTH BEND, IN (May 7, 2017) - Consistent offense was the difference for the Clinton LumberKings in a 11-9 win over the South Bend Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Four Wind Field. The LumberKings (11-17) held off a late charge by the Cubs (18-11) to snap a four-game losing streak.
Big innings proved to be the difference in the LumberKings win. After scoring single runs in the first, second, and third innings, Clinton broke out for a five-run fifth inning in which they sent 10 men to the plate. Anthony Jimenez led the way with a 3-for-4 afternoon at the plate and was not out done by Yojhan Quevedo who drove home four runs in a 2-for-5 day at the dish.
The top of the fifth began with the LumberKings trailing 4-3. The South Bend Cubs who twice scored four runs in an inning took the lead in the bottom of the third with their first four-run rally of the day.
Quevedo's first RBIs of the day started the scoring in the five-run top of the fifth of Cubs reliver Pedro Silverio. He floated a soft liner down the first base line to bring home two runs and was followed by a Gareth Morgan RBI single, Rayder Ascanio RBI single, and Luis Liberato RBI sacrifice fly that capped the offensive outburst.
In the top of the sixth inning, the LumberKings added three more runs off Silverio (2-3). Quevedo again had the big hit in the inning doubling home two runs to give the LumberKings their largest lead of the day, 11-4.
South Bend rallied to test the LumberKings. After knocking Clinton starter Brandon Miller out of the game after five innings. Miller (3-2) was replaced by Ryne Inman who made his LumberKings debut in the sixth inning.
The Cubs hit Inman hard scoring four times in his first inning of work. After two innings of relief work Inman allowed five run on three hits, while walking three, and recording zero strikeouts.
The LumberKings did not record their first strikeout until the eighth inning when Kyle Wilcox struck out the first batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth.
After scoring five runs over the sixth and seventh innings, the Cubs pulled to within two runs. Wilcox worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning but labored in the ninth. South Bend loaded the bases against Wilcox putting the tying run in scoring position and winning run on first. An Isaac Paredes pop ply to second and D.J. Wilson strikeout ended the Cubs threat. The outing earned Wilcox his first save of the season.
The LumberKings head home to open a six-game home stand with the first of three games against the Lansing Lugnuts. Left-handed pitcher Tim Viehoff (0-3, 3.91) will take the ball for Clinton and face Lansing's right-handed pitcher Mike Ellenbest (0-2, 6.05). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM (CDT) with the pregame show beginning at 6:15 PM (CDT) on 100.3 FM WCCI Erik Oas is on the call. Thursday will be "Thirsty Thursday" at Ashford University. Fans can enjoy $1 ten-ounce Coors Light and Miller Lite draft beer. It will also be Throwback Thursday with the LumberKings wearing special Clinton uniforms from yesteryear, either the Clinton Giants or Clinton Pilots.
