SKY SOX DROP GAME TWO TO STORM CHASERS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After completing their longest game of the season Wednesday night (3:44) with a victory, game two Thursday night proved to be even longer, lasting three hours and fifty minutes as the Sky Sox fell to the Omaha Storm Chasers 13-9 at Security Service Field.
Nate Orf (2-for-3, 3B, 2R, 2 HBP) and Andrés Blanco (3-for-3, 3 RBI) highlighted the evening offensively. Right-hander Freddy Peralta, who entered today with a perfect 4-0 record, had his first rough start of 2018 with the Sky Sox and gave up nine runs (eight earned) through just 3.2 innings.
After the Sky Sox struck into a rhythm offensively with a solo run on the board, Omaha sprinted out of the gates with four runs in each of the next two frames. In the second, after a leadoff walk to Ryan O'Hearn, the 'Chasers collected three hits, including a double while totaling three more hits in the third, adding a three-run home run by Billy Burns, marking his first of the 2018 campaign.
In the bottom half of the third, the Sky Sox would answer back with one to minimize Omaha's lead to 8-2. The inning was sparked by Orf's leadoff triple and was brought in on Brett Phillips' groundout.
The Storm Chasers added a run back in the fourth to make it a 9-2 game, but the Sky Sox were able to string together three runs of their own to make it a 9-5 game. Jacob Nottingham started the inning off with a single and was followed by a walk by Shane Opitz before Keon Broxton launched a fly ball double to centerfield to plate Nottingham. Kyle Wren and Mauricio Dubón would bring in the next two on a sacrifice fly and base hit respectively.
In the fifth, Omaha marked their fourth straight scoring frame with one run to increase their advantage over Colorado Springs to 10-5.
The Sky Sox displayed their final signs of life in the final three innings, adding one run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth, and a solo run in the ninth to their total to get within a final four runs of the Storm Chasers, but were unable to catch up after the 'Chasers three-run, ninth-inning fully supported by Frank Schwindel's three-run home run.
The Sky Sox continue the five-game series against Omaha tomorrow with game three scheduled for 6:40 p.m. at Security Service Field on the first Friday Night Fireworks of the season. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. For all information on Sky Sox, follow along on Facebook and Twitter or visit the team's website at www.skysox.com.
