SKY SOX FALL TO SOUNDS 4-2 ON NASHVILLE'S FOUR HITS
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Sky Sox lost the second game of their road trip and fifth-straight with their 4-2 loss in Nashville Tuesday night. Despite outhitting the Sounds nine to four, the Sky Sox would only go one for 10 with runners in scoring position. Nashville combined for a team cycle with four total hits, plating their four runs on a single, double, triple, home run with the assistance of six walks. With the loss, the Sky Sox fall to three-and-a-half games back in the American North behind Oklahoma City.
After retiring the minimum through two and two-thirds innings, Sky Sox starting hurler Corbin Burnes (L, 1-2) allowed his first hit with two outs in the third - a triple to right field - which did not translate into a run. It wasn't until the fourth inning when Nashville broke through first on the board, plating two runs on two walks and one hit. BJ Boyd and Franklin Barreto would draw back-to-back walks to leadoff Nashville's offensive frame. After a groundout and strikeout, Josh Phegley knocked a two-out RBI double to make it a 2-0 game.
In the fifth, the Sky Sox manufactured a solo run after Tyler Heineman led off the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on Gabriel Noriega's groundout to first base. With two outs, Eric Sogard lined a two-out RBI single to centerfield to plate the Sky Sox first run, minimizing the deficit to within a run.
In each of the sixth and seventh innings, the Sounds put up solo insurance runs to extend the lead 4-1, thanks to a home run by Franklin Barreto in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by Steve Lombardozzi in the seventh.
Sky Sox reliever Jacob Barnes allowed one run after walking two and striking out a pair in one and one-third innings. Southpaw Mike Zagurski tossed the bottom of the eighth, posting a one-two-three frame with a strikeout.
With three outs to work with, Dylan Moore kick started the inning with his third double of 2018 to centerfield. After a dropped third strike on Heineman's swing and miss, forcing a throw to first base, advancing Moore to third with one out, Noriega hit a slow grounder to third, scoring Moore to plate the Sky Sox second run of the contest. With two outs, Nate Orf drew a walk to bring the tying run, Eric Sogard, to the plate, but he would fly out to shallow left field to make it a 4-2 final.
The Sky Sox head into game three against the Nashville Sounds tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m. at First Tennessee Park. Following the four-game series in Nashville, the squad will head to Memphis to play the Redbirds for five more games. The Sky Sox head back home for a five-game homestand beginning May 30 against the Iowa Cubs. __NOTES__
Tomorrow's Expectation: In the second game of the four-game set against the Nashville Sounds, the Sky Sox are sending righty Corbin Burnes to the mound to face righty Chris Bassitt for the Sounds. The last time the Sky Sox faced the Sounds was in Nashville on their last road trip, splitting the series at two games apiece.
Sounds Team Cycle: Despite outhitting the Sounds nine to four, the Sky Sox would only go one for 10 with runners in scoring position. Nashville combined for a team cycle with four total hits, plating their four runs on a single, double, triple, home run with the assistance of six walks.
Five Straight: The Sky Sox 4-2 loss brought by Nashville Tuesday continued the rise of the most consecutive losses for the Colorado Springs squad (5). The most consecutive losses the Sky Sox marked in 2017 were three. In most recent history, the longest amount of consecutive games the Sky Sox lost was 8 back in 2016 when they dropped eight straight on the road (Tacoma and Reno).
Walks Burn Burnes: After totaling a single base on balls in each of his first three starts of the 2018 season, Corbin Burnes has posted at least two walks in five of his last six outings (16 walks in 29.1 innings).
Double-Double: Infielder Dylan Moore combined for one-third of the Sky Sox total hits Tuesday night, knocking the only extra-base hits of the contest for Colorado Springs. His two doubles more than doubled his total with the Sky Sox (3). Since joining the team in May from Biloxi, Moore has 13-for-34 (.382) with three doubles, a triple, four RBI, and has only struck out six times.
On-Base Hacker: On Tuesday night, Kyle Wren continued his on-base rhythm with his solo walk. Wren has only recorded three instances in 2018 where he did not get on base, and they have been all recorded in the month of May.
Climbing: Kyle Wren's one hit Monday gave him 330 hits, passing Eric Young, Jr. for 11th place on the all-time Sky Sox hits list. Now, he is just one hit shy from tying Edgard Velasquez Clemente for 10th place with 331 hits. Nate Orf (281 hits) is three hits away from joining the Top 25 list with Wren. As for runs scored, Wren passes Jayson Nix for 13th place with 183 career runs scored. Not far behind, Orf is at 178 runs scored, passing Webster a Garrison, Jayhawk Owens, and Tim Wheeler for sole possession of 18th place.
Patterns: With the loss Tuesday night, the Sky Sox are now 5-4 against the Sounds this year. After having won five games in a row against Nashville initially, Colorado Springs has dropped four in a row to the Sounds.
Orf on the Rise:  The sacrifice fly by Nate Orf in the fifth inning Monday night was his 16th career sacrifice fly with the Sky Sox, passing Garrett Atkins for 9th place on the sacrifice fly list. Next up at tied for 7th: Matt Miller and Ben Petrick with 17 sacrifice flies each.
Six of a Kind: The Sky Sox totaled their sixth one-run loss of the season after falling 5-4 Monday in Nashville. In total, half of the amount of one-run contests has come between Colorado Springs and Nashville. On May 9 at Security Service Field, the Sky Sox were victorious 6-5 while the other two meetings between the two squads have been in Nashville's favor, first with a 4-3 win and last night 5-4.
Phillips Reaches 600: Brett Phillips played his 600th career Minor League game in the first game on Saturday. In 600 games, Phillips totaled 2,207 at bats, 385 runs, 626 hits, 1060 total bases, 122 doubles, 54 triples, 68 home runs, 317 RBI, 271 walks, 611 strikeouts, and 78 stolen bases.
Just A Bit Inside: With the hit batsmen by Tim Dillard on Saturday in game one of the doubleheader, he has surpassed Jason Young for first place in career-hit batsmen with Sky Sox, sitting at 26 total. Jason Young pitched for the Sky Sox from 2002 to 2005.
Dilly Dilly: Saturday's appearance by Tim Dillard was his 97th regular season appearance, passing Bobby M. Jones for 11th place in games pitched. Zach McClellan is just in front in 10th place with 101 games pitched.
This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox are in midst of a nine game stretch on the road.
