SKY SOX PUT ON FIREWORKS DISPLAY WITH BATS OVER BABY CAKES
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox took game one 9-2 over the New Orleans Baby Cakes after four-and-two-thirds innings played before heavy rain and lightning deterred from any more action and the contest was officially called as a completed game.
The Sky Sox totaled 13 hits through less than five innings of play, including three home runs, a triple, and three doubles. Sky Sox starter Aaron Brooks notched his fifth win of the season with five innings logged. The righty allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three.
On a sold out night of 8,995 at Security Service Field, the Sky Sox momentum got going early, and in style. After leadoff Brett Phillips went down on strikes, shortstop Orlando Arcia saw one pitch and belted it to the opposite field and over the right field wall. In the very next at bat, Tyrone Taylor made it a 2-0 ballgame with another home run to right field. With two outs, Andrés Blanco drew a two-out walk while Shane Opitz singled behind him. Jake Hager stepped up and made it a 3-0 lead on his double to right field before Quintin Berry ended the frame after a strikeout.
In the third, the Sky Sox extended their lead to 4-0 manufactured a leadoff single by Christian Bethancourt, walk to Blanco, and two groundouts by Opitz and Hager.
In the top of the fourth, the Baby Cakes plated two runs cutting the Sky Sox lead to 4-2. Eric Campbell started the inning with a one-out double and advanced the third on Isaac Galloway's single to right field. Campbell scored the first run on a groundout to third base while Galloway scored the second run on Cristhian Adames single to left field.
The Sky Sox broke out in the bottom of the fifth with five runs to take a powering seven-run lead (9-2). Taylor led off the half with his fifth triple of the season and scored on Bethancourt's sacrifice fly ball to right field. After Blanco and Opitz both sent consecutive singles to left field, Hager delivered with his second double of the night to bring around both runners. Berry capped off the frame with his second home run of the season - a two-run drive over the right field wall - to complete the frame before Mother Nature decided to stop the parade via heavy rain and lightning.
The Sky Sox head into game two against the New Orleans Baby Cakes. After the five-game series is complete, the league will enter begin a three-day All-Star Break, and then will hit the road for five more games against the Baby Cakes in New Orleans. Tomorrow's Preview: In the second game of Colorado Springs' homestand and five-game set versus the New Orleans Baby Cakes, the Sky Sox are sending righty Alec Asher to the mound to square off against New Orleans' southpaw Dillon Peters. Asher is looking for their fifth win of the 2018 campaign while Peters is seeking his third.
Arcia Shows Up In Style: Infielder Orlando Arcia played in his first Sky Sox game at Security Service Field since August 1, 2016. On Wednesday, Arcia saw one pitch from Baby Cakes' starter Gallen which he lined to the opposite field and over for a solo home run. In his one season with Colorado Springs, Arcia knocked eight home runs before getting the call from the Brewers.
Back-To-Back History:  The back-to-back homers by Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday night marked the fourth time the Sky Sox hit back-to-back homers against New Orleans. The other three happened in Colorado Springs: April 14th, 2001 - Brooks Kieschnick and Mike Peeples off Brian Powell in Bottom 1st, New Orleans won 15-8; July 24th, 2008 - Joe Koshansky and Jayson Nix off Jose Santiago in Bottom 2nd, Sky Sox won 9-6; August 4th, 2010 - Travis Metcalf and Michael McKenry off Wes Whisler in Bottom 4th, Sky Sox won 10-4.
Brooks CG: Despite only going five innings in the game, Aaron Brooks officially marked the third complete game for the Sky Sox in the Brewers era. It marked the first complete game by a pitcher this season for the Sky Sox. Last season, Angel Ventura notched the one and only complete game last season.
Have a Night, Hager: Infielder Jake Hager, in his 13th game with the Sky Sox, collected four RBI on the night after going 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Everyone Hits: On Wednesday night's four-and-two thirds innings Independence Day contest, every Sky Sox player in the lineup, including starting pitcher Aaron Brooks, collected a hit. Phillips, Taylor, Opitz, and Hager all had two hits in the game.
Orf's Curtain Call: Two days after the Brewers announced that they selected the contract of the 28-year-old and making his debut, infielder Nate Orf recorded his first big league hit in memorable fashion Wednesday against the Twins, belting a solo home run into the left field corner. Teammates Jesús Aguilar and Manny Piña lifted Orf onto their shoulders and up the dugout steps and raised him in front of a sea of 36,700 fans celebrating the occasion. Orf recalled in place for infielder Nick Franklin who was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. Orf, a native of Wentzville, MO, was originally signed by Milwaukee as a non-drafted free agent on June 14, 2013 out of Baylor University.
All-Star Caliber: Colorado Springs' players participating in the 31st Triple-A mid-summer classic are catcher Christian Bethancourt and infielder Nate Orf. Bethancourt, in his first season with the Brewers organization since signing as a free agent on January 8, 2018, was elected and will be representing Colorado Springs as the Pacific Coast League starting catcher. Orf, in his fifth full season with Milwaukee after signing as a non-drafted free agent on June 14, 2013 out of Baylor University, was selected and will be representing the Sky Sox as an All-Star reserve infielder. It marks the Missouri native's first career selection as a mid-season All-Star.
Bombs on Bombs on Bombs on…: The five home runs Sunday night in Round Rock by the Sky Sox marks the ninth time in franchise history (and the first time at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock) for the Sky Sox to belt five home runs in a road game. The last instance, nearly one year ago in Omaha, July 2nd, 2017 when the Sky Sox belted six homers at Werner Park in Omaha, en route to an 11-0 win over the Storm Chasers. (The six homers: Two by Nate Orf, and one each by Andrew Susac, Jett Bandy, Lewis Brinson, and Brett Phillips.) The five home runs tonight also marks the second time the Sky Sox have had a five homer game against the Express. The other instance happened in Colorado Springs, on August 5th, 2006 (Sky Sox won 12-11). Carlos Rivera and Sean Barker both had two homers, and J.D. Closser also homered for the Sky Sox in that game.
Clutch Hitting: Saturday night's extra-inning win was greatly benefited by clutch bats in the hands of Jacob Nottingham and Tyrone Taylor. In the fourth inning, Nottingham gave the Sky Sox the 2-1 lead on his eighth home run of the season (two run). Down again in the seventh, Taylor helped the Sky Sox regain the advantage on his two-out, line drive single. In the top of the 10th, Nottingham, again, clutched up with a two-out, two RBI single to centerfield to give the Sky Sox the late lead.
June Recap: The Sky Sox capped off the month of June in victorious fashion in Round Rock, finishing 17-11 overall. Over 28 games, the team batted .261 collectively with 50 doubles, 14 triples, 37 home runs, and 46 stolen bases.
Extras, Again: Colorado Springs entered into the sixth extra-inning game and second overall with Round Rock, marking their second victory in extras. Coming into Saturday's contest, the Sky Sox lone win in extra-inning matchups came against Round Rock at Dell Diamond on April 22. The Sky Sox plated four runs in the top of the 10th and just squeaked by the Express after they plated three and stranded the bases loaded to end the game.
This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox head into game two against the New Orleans Baby Cakes in the five-game set before going on the three-day All-Star Break July 9-11. After the break, the team will hit the road for five more games against the Baby cakes in New Orleans.
