SKY SOX ROUTED 11-4 BY REDBIRDS, SERIES TIED
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After starting off the homestand Monday with a victory over Memphis, the Sky Sox were routed 11-4 by the Redbirds Tuesday evening in game two after the Tennessee squad collected 14 hits, including four home runs. The Sky Sox took a late lead into the seventh, plating three in the bottom of the sixth, but the Redbirds combined for eight runs over the final three frames to seal their 47th victory of the season. With the loss, the Sky Sox lose an opportunity to gain a game on the first-place Oklahoma City Dodgers after their 5-4 loss to Nashville.
The Sky Sox carried some offensive momentum with them from last night early on in the second inning and took a 1-0 lead on two hits after Andrés Blanco singled to centerfield to plate Christian Bethancourt, who singled an at-bat prior and advanced to second on a throwing error by Memphis second baseman Max Schrock.
In the third, Luke Voit started Memphis' rhythm after reaching second on a fielding error in right field by recently optioned Domingo Santana. After a groundout by Tyler O'Neill for the second out and then a walk to Patrick Wisdom, Adolis García hit his second triple of the season to right field to give the Redbirds a 2-1 advantage. They extended their lead in the top of the fifth to 3-1 on a solo home run by Voit.
Colorado Springs found life in the bottom of the sixth when Tyrone Taylor kicked off the frame with a one-out double to left field. With two outs, Santana collected a double of his own to plate Taylor and move within a run of the Redbirds. Bethancourt followed next with a two-run shot to give the Sky Sox the 4-3 lead.
The advantage didn't last long, however, as Memphis reclaimed the 6-4 after a two-out rally off of reliever Tim Dillard. After Voit's double following two consecutive groundouts, O'Neill lined an RBI ground-rule double to tie the game. Wisdom then broke the tie on his 11th home run of the season to plate two more runs.
Memphis capped off the night with five more runs thanks to O'Neill and Randy Arozarena's home runs off of Corbin Burnes to take a final 11-4 lead.
The Sky Sox enter into the third game of a four-game homestand against the Memphis Redbirds tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. MT scheduled first pitch at Security Service Field in Colorado Springs. Tomorrow's Preview: In game three of this four-game set against the Memphis Redbirds, the Sky Sox are sending righty Brandon Woodruff to the mound to face Memphis righty Chris Ellis. Woodruff is looking for his third win of the season, whereas Ellis is in search of his first of the year with the Redbirds.
Wilkerson's Battle: Righty Aaron Wilkerson completed his fifth start out of eight total with the Sky Sox where he reached at least five innings. His six hits allowed matched a season-high, which was set in his first start with the Sky Sox on May 13 vs. Oklahoma City though he only allowed one earned run. Currently, Wilkerson is 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA.
Poncedeleon Delivered: Memphis righty Daniel Poncedeleon, who tossed three hitless, scorless innings on June 21 against New Orleans, continued his success five days later against the Sky Sox in Colorado Springs. Through five frames, he kept the Sky Sox limited to just two hits. He would exit after six innings while allowing four runs on five hits.
Peralta Report: Sky Sox former ace Freddy Peralta made his Miller Park debut Tuesday night in Milwaukee. He tossed seven, one-hit shutout innings while walking one and striking out 10. According to a report, Peralta is first pitcher since at least 1908 to allow three or fewer hits with five or more strikeouts in each of his first four career appearances. The 35 Ks through first four MLB games is record for Brewers.
Error Streak Over:  With the three errors on Tuesday night, the Sky Sox ended their errorless streak they have been on, which began on June 19.
Burnes Outta' the Pen: Righty Corbin Burnes made his third appearance out of the pen on Tuesday night with a 1.1-inning performance. In 5.1 innings of relief, Burnes has allowed 10 hits, seven runs, walked two, and struck out seven.
Dillard's Outing: The relief appearance by Tim Dillard on Tuesday night was his 101st regular season relief appearance with the Sky Sox, tying him with Zach McClellan for 10th place on the Sky Sox games pitched list. McClellan made 101 appearances from 2005-2007 with the Sky Sox. 
Wear It With Pride: The hit by pitch by Nate Orf on Monday, his 15th of the season, ties for the second most hit by pitches by a Sky Sox player in a single season, with Clint Barmes, who had 15 HBP in the 2004 season. Clint Barmes also holds the single season HBP record, with 22 HBP during the 2007 season.
Three-baggers: The 8th inning triple by Brett Phillips Monday night was his 16th career regular season triple with the Sky Sox, moving into a tie for 10th place on the career triples list with Ben Paulsen. Teammates Kyle Wren is tied with Wayne Kirby in 3rd place at 20 triples, while Nate Orf is tied for 8th place with Choo Freeman at 18 triples.
Helpin' Out: Tyrone Taylor recorded yet another assist on Monday night, for his 12^th of the season, which leads all of the Pacific Coast League in assists.
Clutch City:  Keon Broxton came into the game in the eighth inning Monday night to pinch-hit, hitting a three-run homer for the Sky Sox FIRST pinch-hit home run of the 2018 season.
Zagurski Zaves: Mike Zagurski collected his second save in as many days after recording the save in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. In game two of a doubleheader on Saturday, Zagurski recorded a three-up-three-down save for his second save of the season.
Doubling Up on Shutouts: The Sky Sox posted their sixth shutout of the season Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 victory over the Cubs. On Saturday, in game two of a doubleheader, they posted their fifth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Cubs. Colorado Springs had just posted their fourth shutout Thursday evening against the Iowa Cubs with a 5-0 victory. The last shutout for the Colorado Springs squad before that came on May 24 in Nashville when they blanked the Sounds 4-0. In one series, Colorado Springs doubled their total number of shutouts from three to six after blanking Iowa thrice.
Out in Front:  The only time Iowa led in the entire five-game series was when they had the walkoff walk in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two on Friday night.
Running Away With It:  With the four stolen bases during game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Sky Sox (at that time) had amassed 106 stolen bases, which was the 7th most stolen bases in a single season, with nearly half of the season remaining. The team record for most stolen bases in a season is 169 stolen bases, during the 2009 season. During that season, Eric Young, Jr. had 58 stolen bases, with Mike McCoy adding 40 (1st and 3rd all-time in a single season in the individual SB category).
Doubleheader History:  Saturday's scheduled split day/night doubleheader marks only the second time that the current era Sky Sox (since 1988) has played a split day/night doubleheader. This is the first time that the spot day/night doubleheader was scheduled on the original schedule to start the season. The only other instance where the Sky Sox played a split day/night doubleheader was on June 14th, 2003 at Zephyr Field (now The Shrine on Airline in Metairie) against New Orleans. This was scheduled after the April 8th, 2003 game was rained out during the first Sky Sox visit to New Orleans that season. Both games were scheduled nine-inning games. In Game One, Jason Lane went 3-for-5 with a RBI for the Z's, as the Zephyrs beat the Sky Sox, 2-1 in 11 innings (T-3:17, A-3,273). In Game Two, Gabe Kapler went 1-for-2 with 2 SB for the Sky Sox, but Zephyrs pitcher threw a four-hit nine-inning shutout, striking out nine, as the Zephyrs blanked the Sky Sox, 9-0 (T-2:24, A-7,812). Last year, the Sky Sox tried to play a split day/night doubleheader at home on August 10th against Round Rock, after consecutive rainouts on August 8th and 9th. The Sky Sox had won the first game, 4-2. However, more rain arrived between games, and the evening game was once again postponed. During a previous baseball era back in the 1950's in the Single-A Western League, the Colorado Springs and Des Moines teams played a split day/night doubleheader in Colorado Springs. On July 21st, 1957 at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs, the Single-A Sky Sox beat the Des Moines Demons, 4-3 in the afternoon game, and 15-9 in the evening game. Normally doubleheaders back then had one game nine innings and one game seven innings, but in this doubleheader, both games were nine innings. Des Moines was a Single-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs then, while Colorado Springs was affiliated with the Chicago White Sox.
Blanks:  After posting their fourth shutout of the season against Iowa Thursday night, the Sky Sox opened game two with five more shutout innings before allowing their first run of the series in the sixth frame, for 14 shutout innings against the Cubs to start the series.
Out-Hit W: The win in game one over the Cubs marked just the 10th time for the Sky Sox out of 28 times this season when they were out-hit by opponents and walked away with the victory.
This Week's Preview:  The Sky Sox are back home to host the Memphis Redbirds, St. Louis Cardinals top affiliate, for four games at Security Service Field before going back on the road on Friday.
