SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions evened up their series with the Iowa Cubs Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium as they came out victorious 2-1. Jake Hager came through for the Missions in the eighth inning with a game-winning double that bounced off the wall in left field.
Hager entered the game in a double switch in the top of the eighth inning before delivering the key hit of the game in the home half of the frame. Tyrone Taylor ripped a base hit to left field to lead off the inning and scampered home on Hager's double two batters later. The double caused controversy as Iowa left fielder Donnie Dewees threw his hands in the air to signal a ground rule double. The umpires determined the ball hit off the top of the wall and awarded Taylor the run much to the dismay of Iowa manager Marty Pevey who was thrown out of the game.
San Antonio's Burch Smith and Iowa's Jeffrey Passantino matched each other pitch for pitch on the mound. Smith picked up his third quality start of the season as the right-hander allowed just a single run on three hits in six innings while fanning six in the process. Passantino, making just his third appearance above Single-A, struck out five batters across five innings while allowing just one run on three hits.
For the fourth straight game the Missions yielded the first run of the game as the I-Cubs posted a run in the top of the first inning. Ian Happ drew a walk and came in to score on a Phillip Evans that found the gap in right center field. San Antonio evened the score in the fourth inning. Mauricio Dubón roped a double to right field, moved to third on a Cory Spangenberg base hit. David Freitas lifted a fly ball deep enough into center field to bring Dubon across home plate.
The Missions conclude their five-game series with the Iowa Cubs Tuesday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. Right-hander Zack Brown (2-5, 5.94) will start for the Missions against right-hander Colin Rea (9-2, 3.27) for the I-Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
