AMARILLO - Caleb Robert's two-out RBI single in the ninth inning made the difference for the Sod Poodles Thursday night as they walked off the Hooks, 4-3, before 6,008 fans at Hodgetown.
Nine-hole hitter S.P. Chen worked a walk to start the ninth-inning rally. Chen, who homered in the fifth inning of his Double-A debut, tried to win the game on a double to left field by Jordan Lawlar. Joey Loperfido got to the ball quickly, and thanks to a fine relay throw from the shortstop Chad Stevens, Chen was tagged by C.J. Stubbs at home plate for the second out. Two pitches later, Roberts finished the game with a liner into center.
Rhett Kouba turned in a sturdy start for CC, scattering three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over 5 1/3 innings. The damage against Kouba came on three solo home runs at hitter-friendly Hodgetown.
Zach Dezenzo, who drove in six as part of a two-homer night Wednesday, opened the second with a wall-banging double. Dezenzo later stole third before scampering home on Jordan Brewer's sac fly.
The Hooks netted their second run in the fourth when Loperfido launched a 438-foot home run to left-center, giving him 18 home runs and 60 RBIs on the year.
Stubbs and Kenedy Corona gave CC a fleeting 3-2 advantage with back-to-back doubles in the fifth.
With the help of a Tyler Brown strikeout to strand two in the eighth, Derek West delivered 1 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Ray Gaither recorded two outs while facing a pair of hitters in relief of Kouba.
