The Nashville Sounds scored three runs to tie the game in the ninth inning, and eventually held on for an 8-6 win over the Round Rock Express in 12 innings Monday night at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
The Sounds came all the way back from a 5-1 deficit and Patrick Wisdom delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth. Wisdom's huge base hit came just one day after he delivered a game-tying three-run homer in Nashville's come-from-behind 9-7 win Sunday afternoon.
After both teams put up a zero in the tenth, Nashville took a 6-5 lead in the 11th on Zack Granite's run-scoring single. The lead didn't last long as Alex De Goti's one-out, run-scoring single to right field evened the game at 6-6.
Round Rock ran out of available pitchers and had to turn to backup catcher Jamie Ritchie to pitch the 12th. The Sounds took advantage and scored two runs on RBI singles by Hunter Cole and Granite.
Nashville closer David Carpenter was tasked with the bottom of the 12th and he delivered. The right-hander retired three straight Round Rock hitters to notch his sixth save of the season.
Delino DeShields sparked the scoring immediately in the top of the first inning when he cracked a solo home run down the left field line. The lead didn't last, however, as the Express hit three home runs off Sounds' starter Ronald Herrera in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead.
Matt Davidson's RBI double in the eighth inning cut the deficit to 5-2 and Jett Bandy's solo homer in the eighth pulled the Sounds to with a pair of runs at 5-3.
Relievers Taylor Guerrieri, Miguel Del Pozo, Josh Fields and Kyle Bird combined to toss 5 2/3 shutout innings as the Sounds climbed back into the game.
The Sounds return home to First Tennessee Park to begin a 13-day, 14-game homestand on Tuesday. Right-hander Phillips Valdez (0-5, 5.23) starts for the Sounds against left-hander Génesis Cabrera (1-3, 6.95) for the Redbirds. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
