Josh Phegley delivered a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Nashville Sounds a come-from-behind 3-2 win in front of 7,189 fans at First Tennessee Park Wednesday night.
Phegley's RBI single scored Nick Martini who tied the game earlier in the inning with a run-scoring single to right field. The game-winner by Phegley is the fourth walk-off win of the season for Nashville who are now three games over .500 for the first time in 2018.
The two teams played to a 1-1 game through nine innings as the night belonged to the pitchers. Sounds' starter Eric Jokisch allowed one run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. Reliever Raúl Alcántara worked after Jokisch and followed with 3 1/3 shutout innings.
Colorado Springs starter Alec Asher went four frames and allowed one run, and the bullpen combination of Erik Davis and Mike Zagurski kept it at 1-1 with four shutout innings.
Colorado Springs grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th when catcher Christian Bethancourt came through with a run-scoring single with two outs.
Martini immediately tied the game with Jorge Mateo starting the bottom of the 10th at second base. Ramón Laureano singled to put runners at first and second, and BJ Boyd successfully moved both runners 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Beau Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Jake Smolinski struck out for the second out in the inning.
Phegley's game-winner came on an 0-1 pitch from Radhames Liz. It was the sixth time this season the Sounds had an opportunity to climb to three games over .500 after dropping the previous five.
The fourth and final game of the series is scheduled for Thursday at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Kendall Graveman (2-0, 5.00) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Freddy Peralta (5-1, 3.63) for the Sky Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
